The 18th Day (Rainy): The Goryō-e (御霊会, spirit-pacification festival) was held. This morning, the daughter of Kikyū, named Otan, died of illness. She was five years old. The 21st Day: In the evening, a meeting (yoriai) was held. The author did not attend. Around this time, the railings (kōran) on all four sides of the old main shrine hall (honsha koden) were removed, and new railings were installed on three sides of the heiden (offering hall). The 22nd Day: Because there had been a meeting the previous evening, there was none today. Either yesterday or today, a summons came from the Tensō (court liaison official) requesting the head priest and shrine performers to appear, and when they did so, it was found that a petition had been submitted by the shrine's serving monks (gusō) and by Hōgo-in and Hōbodai-in of Tōji (East Temple), stating that since they had presented sacred relics (shari) at every past construction project, it would be appropriate for them to once again dedicate sutras and relics on this occasion as well. The documentary precedents (kanrei) from Tōji's side cited that this practice had been observed at every occasion since the first presentation in the sixth year of the Hakuhō era (白鳳六年) of Emperor Tenmu's reign. The serving monks (gusō), for their part, submitted a written statement claiming their authority derived from the Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa The 23rd Day: Today, at the residence of the shoshi (shrine administrator) Fukuchoku, a meeting of six persons was held in the capacity of kimoire-kata (facilitators/overseers) for the shrine talismans (ofuda): Korihisa, Eiken, Suemichi, Toshinao (serving as shoshi-dai, deputy administrator), an ujizamurai (clan warrior retainer), and Yasunari (known at the time as Sukeroku) — six persons in all. There was a deliberation on the fair copy (seisho) of the records, covering matters of seating arrangements, intermediary requests (kuchire), and the journal/diary (nikki).
