The matter was supposed to be investigated and a reply given thereafter, but without waiting for that reply, the Buddhist priests (供僧, *sōsō*) went directly to the public authorities (公儀, *kōgi*), which was deemed improper. It was stated that this constituted a disrespect toward the Imperial Messenger (伝奏, *tensō*), and it is said that the latter was visibly displeased and alarmed. **Ninth Day.** Light rain, clearing around the Hour of the Snake (approximately 10 a.m.). The morning rituals were conducted as usual. However, since Shōhōri (正祝) Shigetomi's maternal cousin (従母) had recently died, his father Shigeyori (重副) attended in his place as a substitute (名代). Upon arriving at the sacred key (御鍵), it was found that the sacred lock (御錠) would not open. The shrine officials consulted among themselves, and first the Chief Priest (正禰宜) Nobuhisa rose from his seat and went to the sacred key; next the Assistant Celebrant (権祝) Shigeshige went; then the Kifune Shrine Priest (貴布祢禰宜) Narihisa; then Kataoka Shrine Celebrant (片岡祝職) Hisakatsu — but still the lock would not open. Next, three clansmen (氏人): Kanenori, Yasunosuke, and Akitoshi went to investigate, and discovered that bees had entered the lock and, using the resin of cedar and cypress, had sealed it solid. By inserting thin bamboo slivers and nail-like implements and trying various methods, it was eventually opened. Thereupon, in order to present the sacred offerings (御料) to the inner sanctuary (内陣), those from the Five Officials (五官) down to the Acting New Shrine Priest (仮新宮禰宜) first assembled. At that time, a new sudare reed blind (御簾), a *mōkō* curtain (もこうの幌), and the hem-cloth (御裾; *annotation: the winter hem-cloth*) were placed on a round tray (丸盤), and the Administrator (別当) first brought and presented them. Then the sacred offerings were presented as usual. The old curtain…
