Regarding the decoration of the inner sanctum, the records specify ten ujibito (shrine attendants); however, since there are now many shrine officials (shashi) present on this occasion, all of them come out together to perform the decorating. The Tonomoryo (Bureau of Palace Maintenance) arrives and lays out rush matting paths. Privately, within the sanroya (retreat hall), Moku-no-Gonsuke and Suetsuna were directed to prepare the ceremonial written proceedings (shikisho) for the assembly. A separate diagram of the curtained enclosure (tobarioya) also exists. At the time of the imperial envoy's arrival, shrine officials and ujibito line up on the western side inside the second torii gate to receive him. One chief priest (kannagi) receives him inside the tower gate (Romon). Next, within the area north of the Romon known as the tamari, at the stone platform (ishidan), the head of the Bureau of Divination (Onmyotō), Kotoku, erects the ritual purification stand (an) and performs the purification rites (harae), after which the stand is removed. (Marginal note: Our people have never been involved in this matter; however, the sake vessels (choshi), earthenware vessels (doки), washed rice, and the stand (an) are borrowed from our side.) Next, the sataнin (affair managers) and kimoiri (coordinators) were instructed to newly arrange the reception procedures for the imperial envoy's attendance and the arrival of various officials. The envoy's party arrived immediately, and the go-densō (imperial liaison officer) first entered the imikoya (ritual purity house) to wait. The betto (administrator), both kannshō (shrine officials), and the shishō (scribes) were to be seated in the curtained enclosure, as shown in the diagram. Next, the lacquered chests (karabitsи) containing the prepared offerings were carried and placed slightly to the east of the tatesuна (decorative sand mounds) before the shrine, positioned lengthwise in a north-south orientation. Next, around the Hour of the Rooster (approximately 6 p.m.), the shrine officials and ujibito departed from the sanroya (retreat hall) to take up their duties. The shrine officials…
