The ceremonial dress consists of formal court dress (sokutai) with an under-robe (shitagasane); the five senior officials (gokan-yaku) wear a chihaya (white ceremonial over-robe) on top. Other shrine officials wear simplified attire, and the ten ujibito wear a large katabira (hemp garment) in the manner of a hōi (informal court robe) with an under-robe. [Marginal note: With a red border (akabuchi), though some wear it without.] In the fifth year of Kan'ei (1628), they wore a chihaya over formal court cap-and-robe dress (ikan).
There are six shrine attendants (jinin) carrying banners (?) and six carrying torches, who proceed in two columns as a forward procession.
Entering the Second Torii from Nara Bridge, the torches are extinguished from that point, and each person takes a seat at the covered waiting area (watariya) to the west of the auxiliary shrine (gonden). Each person receives one round mat (enza). However, this is after taking seats at the open-lattice seating area (sukashiseki). [Marginal note: This does not apply to the head priest (kannagi), shoe-bearers (kutsumochi), white-robed attendants (hakuchō), and umbrella-bearers (kasamochi).]
Next, the Daigeki (Senior Secretary of the Grand Council of State) and Kanmu (Administrative Official) wear formal court dress [Marginal note: the robe (uenokinu) of the Fifth Rank], accompanied by two torch-bearers each, two persons in hōi (informal court robe), umbrella-bearers, shoe-bearers, white-robed attendants (hakuchō), the kimoiri (administrative coordinator), Shikibu-no-jō Toshinao, Kurano-suke, and ujizamurai (clan warriors), who serve as a forward escort.
They pass through the First Torii, the Second Torii, the bridge hall (hashidono), and the raised bridge (agebashi), cross the Jeweled Bridge (Tamabashi), and enter the Rōmon (two-storied gate). At this point, the torches are stopped to the left and right, and first the Daigeki, trailing his robes, places the imperial decree document (senji mokuroku), one copy, into the viewing box (ranbako), and enters the inner gate (nakamon) wearing his shallow shoes (asagutsu). [Marginal note: The attendant in hōi carries the viewing box and accompanies him.] Before the Chinese-style door (karado), the document is handed to the head priest (kannagi), who receives it and enters through the karado.
Next, the Benmu (Secretary Official) waits at the Rōmon, and after the Daigeki withdraws, he enters the inner gate in turn. The process of handing over one document is the same as above. However, both persons withdraw to their lodging from in front of the bathhouse (yuya).
