(Continued from previous page) On such occasions, one must always request the old shrine building. The reply was to be conveyed to Lord Kongōin, and so it was communicated in a reasonable manner. The question is whether this should serve as a precedent going forward.
◦A dispute between Chikurin-in and Shōshō arrived, and a written statement (kōjōgaki) was submitted on the fourth day. According to the draft document, a hearing (taiketsu) had previously been conducted in Edo before the Temple and Shrine Commissioner (Jisha Bugyō), and both parties claimed to have won their cases. Since the Commissioner's pronouncements carry great weight within the shrine, it is difficult to change the situation at this point. It was noted that advice had been privately offered to both parties, and that if inquired about, this should be reported.
◦Next, regarding the matter of leaving the petition for the horse-racing grounds unattended — as this was deemed inappropriate — it was ordered that Shūrijin Hirokazu be sent together with the aforementioned three persons, and a messenger was dispatched. Hirokazu immediately appeared and acknowledged the order.
◦Regarding the gifts to be presented in Edo, it was announced today that the delegation should proceed to Edo at their earliest convenience. A list of gifts to be presented to various parties was drawn up accordingly:
To the Shōgun (Kubō-sama): a ceremonial sword (tachi), a folded paper (origami), silver equivalent to the price of a horse (uma-dai gin), and a box of kanjū (inventories of sutra recitations).
To the Senior Councillors (Rōjū): kanjū.
To the Temple and Shrine Commissioner (Jisha Bugyō): Although kanjū are not normally required during the Aoi Festival season, it was deemed appropriate to present kanjū on this occasion. For all others, fans (ōgi), or sword-scabbard cords (sageo), and fish dishes (sakana) were deemed appropriate.
