共に、つぶさに注意して城塞の防備を調査検分しつつ、
「ストラスブール」「ヴィッサンブール」「トゥール」および
「メッツ」城等の内外を徘徊せり。また処々に地質学の
様式に備うべき石片を砕きつつ歩行せり。また同
行者と植物学に関係する所の草木を探究する
ために水流・山壁・丘陵等を探索せしなりと○かく
して城郭・山川を実測し、傍らその詳細なる地図の助
を以てせし故に、戦地に臨み地誌を以て城地

That is to say, three years previously, this person, with hammer in hand, along with a young companion whose interests were inclined toward botany (who is the present "Crown Prince"),
carefully and attentively inspected the defenses of fortresses while
wandering through the interior and exterior of the castles of
"Strasbourg," "Wissembourg," "Toul," and
"Metz." He also walked about breaking stone fragments everywhere
that should be collected according to geological
methods. He also explored streams, mountain walls, hills and such
in order to investigate, together with his companion, plants and trees
related to botany○ Thus,
having surveyed the castles, mountains and rivers in detail, and having the assistance of precise maps,
when facing the battlefield, he could use topographical knowledge of the castle sites
