が、一千八百六十三年以来党中より二心あらん
ことを疑われし時より、百方親を帝に求む。而して
帝より頗る厚く遇せられし後、一千八百七十年
の冬において「プライム・ミニスター」を命ぜられ、「ル
ーエル」の位地を襲いたり。その政を執るに方て諸
事緩案にして行われず、また不徳にして、その性怒り
易し。故に既往の党与、即ち民主政治党より無慈

and he became merely a subservient instrument. "Ollivier"
belonged to the democratic party. In a certain year he became the leader of that party,
but from 1863 onwards, when he was suspected by his party members of having
divided loyalties, he sought by all means to curry favor with the emperor. After
being treated with considerable favor by the emperor, in the winter of 1870
he was appointed "Prime Minister" and succeeded to "Rouher's"
position. In executing his policies, all matters proceeded
slowly and were not implemented, and being lacking in virtue, his nature was easily
angered. Therefore, he received merciless humiliation from his former
party associates, namely the democratic party. Thus, the perils of his position
