Shrine Families (Shake)
Although a vermillion-seal document of this kind had been issued, they came to collect it while concealing the matter from us. They came hiding it from us, and were about to receive it back with one clause removed — but as we happened to encounter them at a lodging in Kyoto, we attempted to inspect the document, whereupon they told us they had to return to their home territory immediately. We therefore said forcefully: "Why are you concealing this from us? We find it deeply suspicious that you should hide the very clause that we ourselves arranged through negotiations with Lord Iga-no-kami." Upon their showing us the document, we found that the section pertaining to Kifune Shrine had indeed been removed before they received it. We therefore said: "Let us accompany you at once to Lord Iga-no-kami, and have the one clause concerning Kifune written back in." Having previously consulted with Lord Iga-no-kami, and noting that there had previously been many items recorded, we proposed that "this time, everything be written together on a single sheet of paper," and we immediately prepared a draft document and brought it to present every day. Please see this for yourselves. We went immediately to the residence of Lord Ishu (Iga-no-kami) and appealed to his document officer (御物書), insisting that "if this is not written into the document this time, it will require considerable additional effort to rectify later." Nevertheless, one person — the one known as Samanosuke — apparently tore up the document and sought to undo everything. To all those present and bearing witness, please hear this: as we have stated, the exclusion of Kifune's village holdings is an utterly outrageous matter. In previous years, we personally and independently arranged the vermillion-seal document exempting the Kifune village holdings and presented it to the entire shrine community (惣中) — this…
