西洋人の話を記したものがある。元禄年中にかつて長崎に来航した、西洋の羅馬国（ローマ国）——イタリア国の都城の名であり、耶蘇天主教の発祥の地——の人が来船した。その中に「バッテヒスタ」という者がいた。ある日、語って言うには、（宝永五年の話である）「今より五十年前（皇国の万治年間にあたる）、我が本国（羅馬のことを言う）の王が、四海の果てを知ろうとして、巨艦十二艘を造った。そして人に命じて、一方に三艘ずつ、同じ日に四方に遣わした。しばらく経って、まず東の海へ行ったものが帰還して言うには、『東洋を数万里走ったところ、突然船が泥の海に入り込んで数日間動けなくなった。にわかに大風と荒波が起き、船は数里退いた。これによって帰ることができた』と。次に南方へ行ったものが帰還して言うには、『ここを去ること数万里にして、突然怒濤が大きく溢れ、その声は雷のようで、船は前に進むことができなかった。すなわち千里鏡をもってこれを望見すると、南の方五……』

Furthermore, upon reading the *Fukkoku Rekishō-hen* (French Treatise on Astronomy and Calendar), one finds in the notes written by Arai Hakuseki an account of a Western person. During the Genroku era, a person came by ship to Nagasaki from the Western land of Roma (Rome) — the name of the capital city of Italy, the birthplace of the Jesus Catholic faith. Among them was a man called "Battista." One day he spoke, saying (this being a story from the fifth year of Hōei): "Fifty years ago [corresponding to the Manji era of our Imperial nation], the king of my homeland (referring to Rome), wishing to know the extremities of the four seas, constructed twelve great vessels. He then ordered people to dispatch three vessels in each direction, sending them to all four cardinal directions on the same day. After a long while, those who had first gone to the Eastern Sea returned and said: 'After sailing tens of thousands of *ri* through the Eastern Ocean, the ships suddenly entered a sea of mud and could not move for several days. Suddenly a great wind and terrifying waves arose, and the ships retreated several *ri*. It was by this means that we were able to return.' Next, those who had gone southward returned and said: 'After departing several tens of thousands of *ri*, the waves suddenly swelled greatly, their sound like thunder, and the ships could not advance. Using a telescope to observe from there, to the south five [*ri*?]...' "
