六百里斗リモアラント思フニ。海水大ニ起リテ山ノ如ク。其高
キコト十丈。或ハ二十丈モアラント思ハル。其余ハ見ル所ナシト云

数万里。竟ニ日光ヲミス。只曚乎トシテ向フ所ヲ知ラス。而シ
テ蛛網ノ如キモノアリテ。遍ク海面ニ覆ヘリ。堅クシテ能ク舩ヲ

行キシ者還リテ云ク。是亦海上ヲ相去ルコト数万里ニシテ。

六百里ほどもあろうかと思われるほど、海水が大きく盛り上がって山のようで、その高さは十丈、あるいは二十丈もあろうかと思われた。その他には見えるものがなかったと言った。
また西の海へ行ったものが帰ってきて言うには、これもまた大洋を過ぎ行くこと数万里、ついに日の光が見えなくなり、ただぼんやりとして向かう方角もわからなくなった。そして蜘蛛の巣のようなものがあって、海面一面に覆い被さっており、堅くて船をさえぎることができた。それを破り裂いて逃げ帰ることができた。しかしながら暗黒の中で、果たしてこれが何であるかを判別することができなかった。それ以外には見るものがなかったと言った。
また北の方へ行った者が帰ってきて言うには、これもまた海上を遠く行くこと数万里にして、広大な土地を見た。その広さは果てしなく、また人の住む様子もなかった。そこで三艘の船が相談して、この地を開拓しようと欲し、人を選んで残すこと凡そ五十人、その糧食と器械を分け与えて帰り、この事を国王に告げ、再び数百人を率いて彼の地に至り、それを治めることを請うた。王はすなわちこれを許した。そこで再びその地に至って見ると、初めに留め置いた五十人は皆すでに死んでいた。おそらくこれは北極下の土地であり、風土が異なるためであろうと言った。これは白石翁が直接筆記した所である。それゆえこの西洋人の話は、その見聞した実情を語ったものであろうと言っている。なるほどそうであろうと思われる。
「説略」に言う。また月食の時に、一つの黒い影があって、月の光を遮り覆う。この黒い影はすなわち地球の影である。なぜならばこの時、月と相対して地球がちょうど中間に位置しているので、日光が月に射し当たることができず、ゆえに地の影が月の光を遮り覆うのである。そしてその黒い影は正円である。よって地球は円形であることが知られる。これが第四の証拠である。 この意味は、満月の

The one who had gone to the western sea returned and reported: he too had traveled tens of thousands of *ri* across the great ocean, until finally the sunlight disappeared entirely, and in a vague dimness he could no longer tell which direction he was heading. Moreover, there was something like a spider's web spread across the entire surface of the sea, solid enough to obstruct the ship. He managed to tear through it and escape back home. However, in the pitch darkness, he could not determine what this thing actually was. Beyond that, there was nothing to be seen, he said.
The one who had gone to the north returned and reported: he too had traveled tens of thousands of *ri* across the sea and came upon a vast land. Its expanse had no limit, and there were no people living there. The three ships then deliberated together, wishing to open up this land, and divided their number, leaving behind about fifty people with provisions and equipment. They returned and reported this matter to the king, requesting to go back with several hundred more people to govern that land. The king granted permission. So they returned to that land, only to find that the fifty people originally left behind had all already died. This was presumably because it was a land beneath the North Pole, and the climate and conditions were entirely different.
This is what was personally recorded in writing by the Elder Arai Hakuseki. Therefore, it is said, this account by the Westerner must be a truthful description of what he actually witnessed. This seems indeed plausible.
The *Setsryaku* [*Explanation and Summary*] states: Also, at the time of a lunar eclipse, there is a dark shadow that covers and blocks the moonlight. This dark shadow is none other than the shadow of the Earth itself. This is because at such a time, the Earth happens to be positioned directly in between [the Sun and the Moon], so that sunlight cannot reach the Moon; therefore the Earth's shadow covers and obscures the light of the Moon. And that dark shadow is perfectly circular. From this one can know that the Earth is a spherical shape. This is the fourth piece of evidence. The meaning of this is: at the full moon...
