現代語訳
ある時、一つの黒いものが月を遮り覆って、月の光が失われる。これを月食という。この黒いものは地球の影である。その理由は、太陽と月が互いに正反対の位置に来た時、地球がその中間に位置して日光を遮ると、地球の後方（背面）に必ず先の尖った長い黒い影が生じる。そのため、太陽の光が直接月に届くことができない。これを地影（地球の影）という。月の軌道（白道）の交点がこの地影に入った時、月の光が失われるという。このように、太陽が地球を照らし、その向こう側に生じる影の中に月が入った状態であるから、月が地球の影に覆われたということになる。その地球の影が月を覆う様子を見ると、その形はまさに完全な円形（団円）である。その円形の影を生じさせるこの大地であるから、この大地は球のような円形であるという証拠だと言うのである。

At times, a black object obscures and covers the moon, causing the moon to lose its light. This is called a lunar eclipse. This black object is the shadow of the Earth (chiqiu/地球). The reason for this is that when the sun and moon come to directly opposite positions, and the Earth lies in the middle blocking sunlight, a long, pointed black shadow inevitably extends behind the Earth. Therefore, the sun's light cannot directly reach the moon's body. This is called the "Earth's shadow" (地影). It is said that when the intersection of the moon's orbital path (the white road/白道) enters this Earth shadow, the moon loses its light. Thus, when the sun illuminates the Earth and the moon enters the shadow cast on the far side, the moon becomes covered by the Earth's shadow. Observing how this Earth shadow covers the moon, its shape is perfectly round (団円).
