### On the Province of Iga (伊賀国)
As for Iga: when Amaterasu Ōmikami sent Susanoo-no-Mikoto down to the earth, she entrusted him with the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi (the Ten-Fist Sword) so that he might use it to subdue evil spirits and demons. Thereafter, however, the Mikoto became enamored with Inadahime (Kushiinadahime), the daughter of the earthly deity Tenazuchi, and neglected the proper conduct of government. Because of this, the Great Deity grew wrathful and demanded that the sword be returned immediately. But Inadahime desired the sword intensely, and so the Mikoto gave it to her. The Great Deity's anger deepened further. Having no other recourse, the Mikoto made the following plea: "I have a most beloved consort. I shall offer her in place of the sword." He thus submitted this proposal, and the Great Deity graciously accepted. After that, due to the terms of this agreement, the Mikoto was no longer involved in the administration of the Saigū (the Consecrated Shrine). During this period, various supernatural disturbances and strange occurrences (mononoke) took place in the Great Deity's sacred precinct. Accordingly, during the reign of Emperor Sujin, a princess (hime-miya) was installed in Iga Province as a sacred priestess, and the palace of the Saigū was constructed there. By this act, the Great Deity's wrath was pacified, and it is said that the deity was even pleased. For this reason, that place came to be called "Iga" (伊賀).
