### On the Province of Owari (尾張国) — continued (Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto descended to the side of the mountain path and,) gazing toward the eastern sea where the princess had resided, he crouched down and lamented, crying "My wife! My wife!" It is because of these words that the mountain of the mound (tsuka) in Jōshū (Kōzuke Province) and Shinano came to be called "Wagatsuma" (My Wife). It is also called "Akatsuma." The place where he crouched is called "Usui Pass" (Usui-no-Tōge). Thereafter, he visited the lodging of the princess's father, Gentayū, and from that place transformed into a white bird and flew away westward. The mountain where that bird (the heron/white bird) came to land is called "Sagisaka-yama" (Heron Slope Mountain). It is located in Yamashiro Province. Before the death of the Mikoto, the sacred sword known as "Murakumo-no-Ken" (the Sword of Gathering Clouds), which had been bestowed by the Taijingū (Grand Shrine of Ise), was sent back in advance to the Grand Shrine. When this sword heard of the Mikoto's passing, it flew from the Province of Ise and came to rest upon a camphor tree (kusunoki) on the coast of Owari, where it lamented and burned with such heat that the camphor tree was consumed along with it. When the tree fell into a paddy field, the water of the field began to boil like hot water. For this reason, that place came to be called "Atsuta" (熱田, meaning "hot paddy field"). Furthermore, the sword was enshrined within the remains of the said camphor tree, and that place was consecrated in worship — this is the origin of Atsuta Daijin (the Great Deity of Atsuta). That sword was the blade taken from the tail of the great serpent (orochi) of Izumo during the age of Susanoo-no-Mikoto. It is, in other words, the sword from the tail of that serpent. For this reason, that place... (The page ends here.)
