家来玄蕃江図書面談仕右之口上書相渡候処
其節拙者留守故追而為返事家来玄蕃を以
越後守方江申越候口上書之趣
先刻者為御使者渥美図書被遣候処致他出
御返答延引罷成候先以首尾能御暇被 仰出如例
品々御拝領今朝御礼被 仰上候由目出度存候
然者松平民部大輔殿江対談之儀委細之趣致
承知候尤ニ仰聞ニ可任候得共参勤之刻故打続
用事共御座候間先此度ハ御延引可被下候捨置
申儀ニも無御座候間来春御参府之節御相談
可致候左様御意得可被成候此段宜申由右之通
返答旁以使者越後守方江申遣候処其以後
四月廿三日越後守方ゟ以使者申越候口上書之趣
愈御堅固御座候而珍重存候然者先日渥美図書
を以松平民部大輔殿江御対談之儀申達候処為
御返答以酒井玄蕃方被仰聞候御口上之趣致承
知候其節玄蕃図書江対談申置被帰不及再
御挨拶候拙者儀近日致発足候来春御相談可
現代語訳
家来玄蕃のもとに図書が面談し、右の口上書を渡したところ、その際私は留守でしたので、後日返事として家来玄蕃を通じて越後守方へ申し越した口上書の内容は次の通りです。
「先ほどは御使者として渥美図書をお遣わしいただきましたが、他出しており、御返答が遅れてしまいました。まず、首尾よく御暇をいただき、例の通り品々を御拝領され、今朝御礼を申し上げられたとのこと、めでたく存じます。さて、松平民部大輔殿との対談の件、詳細な趣旨は承知いたしました。もっともなお話で、仰せに従うべきでございますが、参勤の時期でございますので、続けて用事がございます。まず今度はご延期いただきたく存じます。放置するということではございませんので、来春の御参府の際にご相談いたします。そのようにご理解いただきたく存じます。この件、よろしくお伝えください」
右の通り返答を兼ねて使者を越後守方へ申し遣わしたところ、その後四月二十三日に越後守方から使者をもって申し越してきた口上書の趣旨は次の通りです。
「ますますご堅固でいらっしゃって、珍重に存じます。さて、先日渥美図書を通じて松平民部大輔殿との御対談の件を申し達したところ、御返答として酒井玄蕃方を通じて仰せられた御口上の趣旨は承知いたしました。その際、玄蕃が図書に対談して帰ったので、再び御挨拶するには及びません。私は近日中に出発いたします。来春にご相談することに

Retainer Genba met face-to-face with Tosho, who handed over the aforementioned oral message document. Since I was away at that time, I later sent a reply through retainer Genba to Echizen-no-kami's side. The contents of that oral message were as follows:
"Earlier you sent Atsumi Tosho as your messenger, but I was out, so my reply has been delayed. First, I am pleased to hear that you successfully received permission for leave, received the customary gifts as usual, and offered your thanks this morning. Now, regarding the meeting with Lord Matsudaira Minbu-dayū, I have understood the detailed circumstances. It is indeed a reasonable request that I should comply with, but since it is the time for sankin (alternate attendance), I have continuous duties to attend to. For now, I would like you to postpone this matter. This does not mean I am abandoning the issue, so let us discuss it when you come to Edo next spring. Please understand it this way. Please convey this message accordingly."
Having sent this reply along with a messenger to Echizen-no-kami's side, thereafter on the 23rd day of the 4th month, Echizen-no-kami's side sent a messenger with an oral message document with the following contents:
"I trust you are in increasingly good health, which I find most precious. Now, the other day I conveyed through Atsumi Tosho the matter of a meeting with Lord Matsudaira Minbu-dayū, and I have understood the contents of your oral reply conveyed through Sakai Genba's side. At that time, since Genba spoke with Tosho before returning, there is no need for further greetings. I will be departing soon. We shall consult in the coming spring..."
