風俗
中山の風俗については既に前の記録に見えているが、今回の任務で長期間滞在し、見聞がより詳しくなったので、簡潔に整理して風俗採集の参考に供する。

正月十六日には男女ともに墓参りをする。女子は年始にみな毬蹴りを遊戯とする。また板舞という遊戯もあり、木の杭の上に巨大な板を横に渡し、両端を二、三尺ほど空中に浮かせる。二人の女子が板の上で向かい合って立ち、一人が起き上がると一人が落ち、その勢いを利用して五、六尺ほど跳躍するが、傾いて転んだり横に倒れたりすることはない。

Customs
The customs of Chuzan have already been recorded previously, but during this extended mission, my observations have become more thorough. I shall briefly organize them here to serve as reference for the collection of customs.

On the sixteenth day of the first month, both men and women visit graves. At the beginning of the year, women all play kemari (ball-kicking) as entertainment. There is also a performance called board dancing, where a large board is placed horizontally on wooden posts, with both ends suspended two or three feet above the ground. Two women stand facing each other on the board, and when one rises, the other falls. Using this momentum, they leap five or six feet high, yet never lose their balance or fall to the side.
