Animals include cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, deer, monkeys, and wild boars. There are no tigers, rabbits, or roe deer. [Note: The Ming Unified Gazetteer lists these as local products] [Note: It mentions bears, wolves, and jackals, but upon investigation, none of these exist there]
Domestic animals include chickens, ducks, and geese. Among exotic livestock is the Taihe chicken, which is particularly small compared to ordinary chickens, with short legs and a long tail. The breed originates from the Seven Islands.
Birds include sparrows, crows, pigeons, herons, gulls, wild ducks, bulbuls, turtle doves, green pigeons [Note: come in the twelfth month], wild pigeons, quail, and wagtails [Note: colloquially called] [Note: divine bird], field birds, pheasants, wagtails, cuckoos, mandarin ducks, and swallows. Swallows come in the seventh month but do not nest in human dwellings. Hawks come with the northeast winds from outer islands in the ninth month. Geese occasionally appear but do not come regularly. Cranes sometimes appear singly but are rarely seen. Among exotic birds are the Kohaeru and others.
[Kohaeru] Golden-yellow plumage, long beak, short tail. Sings in the fourth month.
[Maseki] Wing feathers are green with white eyebrows. Comes in the ninth month. Also [Ishikyūshi] resembles the Maseki.
[Uhō] Also called the Queen Mother Bird. Comes in the fourth month.
[Konsatsu] Plumage resembles a hawk but is somewhat smaller. Comes in the eighth month.
[Yōzui] Wings are grayish-brown, black head. Comes in the eighth month.
[Ishikyūdoku] Plumage resembles a sparrow. Comes in the tenth month and sings in spring.
[Bakudokuri] Green plumage. Comes in the tenth month.
Insects include mice, bats, and geckos. Geckos can make sounds like sparrows, doing so in both winter and summer. Lizards live in water ponds, have red bellies with golden light on their backs. There are also small four-legged green snakes commonly seen. Snakes in this country are extremely venomous; they emerge every ninth month to harm people, causing immediate death. [Note: Previous envoy records claim their snakes do not harm people, but this is incorrect] Mosquitoes
