現代語訳

蠅は皆冬に発生する。蟻は中国と同じだが、腹が水晶のように光っており、これを殺すと点のような水が出る。

鱗族（魚類）には鮫、鯉、鮒、鰻、鰍、蝦、金魚、銀縷魚がいる。珍しい産物には毛魚、針魚、燕魚等がある。それらの緑色、赤色、緑鱗、赤章が五彩相い交じり、或いは円いもの、或いは長いものなど数え切れない。土地の人はその色やその形によって呼んでいるが、皆正式な名前はない。海魚を生で切り片にして夜中の暗い所で見ると、皆明るく透けて緑の火光があり、色は熱河の夜光木のようである。

【毛魚】細小で外見は腐ったもののようだが、咀嚼すると味がある。福建の人は皆これを重んじて珍品とする。七月朔前後五日、八月朔前後五日に海中で隊列を成して出現するが、他の月にはそうではない。

【針魚】頭に針の形をしたものを載せている。また鱵とも名付ける。【靴魚】頭が靴のように長い。

【燕魚】燕のようで翼があり飛ぶことができる。古名は鳐、俗に飛魚と呼ぶ。

介族（甲殻類）には亀、黿、鼈がいる。珍しいものには玳瑁等がある。

【玳瑁】甲は亀や鼈のようで、首尾の形はやや尖り、頭は淡紅色を帯びている。

【海馬】馬の首に魚の身、鱗はなく肉は豚のよう。なかなか得難く、得た者はまず王に進献する。

【石鮔】首は円く下から八本の手が生えており、脚はない。土地の人は皆これを料理に用いる。

【蟳】肉は最も佳く、味は蟹のようで大きく、性質は温である。【蟹】大小の種族がそれぞれ異なる。小蟹で五色のものがあり、両鋏は左が大きく右が小さい。小さい方で食物を取り、大きい方で外敵を防ぐ。大きい鋏のみ朱紅色で、照火と名付ける。小蟹で螺の殻の中に住むものを寄生と名付ける。

英語訳

Flies all emerge in winter. Ants are the same as those in China, but their abdomens shine like crystal, and when killed, they emit droplets of water.

Among scaled creatures (fish) are sharks, carp, crucian carp, eels, loaches, shrimp, goldfish, and silver-thread fish. Unusual species include hairy fish, needle fish, swallow fish, and others. Their green, red, green-scaled, and red-patterned varieties intermingle in five colors, some round, some elongated, in countless numbers. Local people call them by their colors and shapes, but they have no formal names. When sea fish are cut into raw slices and viewed in dark places at night, they all appear bright and transparent with a green fiery light, colored like the luminous wood of Rehe.

[Hairy fish] Small and fine, appearing rotten on the outside but flavorful when chewed. Fujian people all prize them as delicacies. They appear in formation in the sea for five days before and after the first day of the seventh month, and five days before and after the first day of the eighth month, but not in other months.

[Needle fish] Has a needle-shaped projection on its head, also called sayori. [Boot fish] Has a head long like a boot.

[Swallow fish] Like a swallow with wings, capable of flight. Its ancient name is ray, commonly called flying fish.

Among shelled creatures are turtles, soft-shelled turtles, and terrapins. Unusual ones include hawksbill turtles and others.

[Hawksbill turtle] Shell like that of turtles and terrapins, with head and tail somewhat pointed, head tinged with light red.

[Sea horse] Horse head with fish body, no scales, flesh like pork. Quite difficult to obtain; those who catch them first present them to the king.

[Octopus] Round head with eight arms growing from below, no legs. Local people all use them in cooking.

[Swimming crab] Meat is of the finest quality, tastes like crab but larger, with a warm nature. [Crabs] Various species of different sizes. There are small five-colored crabs with both claws, the left large and right small. The small one is used for feeding, the large one for defense. Only the large claw is vermillion red, called "fire-lighter." Small crabs living in snail shells are called "parasites."
