(Continued from previous page) — even if this were to cause further harm, for now it was decided that the best course would be to quietly return the sacred pond water today, and to submit further petitions in due course. Accordingly, a draft of the formal oral statement (*kōjōgaki*) was composed, and the representatives Naritohisa and Yasusato appeared in person. The following is the record of the oral statement: --- Respectfully submitted as an oral inquiry: We are most grateful and fortunate that this time the grant of water from the sacred pond has been announced so promptly, and the entire shrine community joins in expressing our deepest appreciation. As the planting of the paddies in this area is now mostly complete, and furthermore the rains have been favorable, we wish to return the sacred pond water. We also humbly wish to submit a further petition should the paddies face particularly severe drought in the future. In any case, as this is a most precious and important water supply, we now wish to proceed with its return. We therefore submit this inquiry. We respectfully request that this matter be given favorable consideration. Respectfully submitted. Representatives of the Kamo Shrine Community: 5th Month, 26th Day (Year of the Boar) Yamamoto Buzen-no-kami Yasusato To: Lord Hino-Ben, *Zassho* officials Mori Nakatsukasa Naritohisa --- 1. It was decided that once the above was delivered and the return of the water completed, this matter should be reported to the intermediary officials at the Imperial Palace. As it was raining today, they traveled by palanquin (*norimono*). 2. Regarding the rainmaking ritual (*amagoi*): since rain had been falling in recent days, which could be considered a sign that prayers had been answered, it was concluded that the ritual scheduled for the following day should be postponed for the time being. The water overseers (*mizu yakunin*) were summoned and asked about the condition of the paddies, and it was determined that if postponing the rainmaking ritual would not cause harm to the paddies, then postponement would be appropriate. Upon summoning and questioning the water overseers, they reported that even if the rainmaking ritual scheduled for the following day were postponed, the paddies would not suffer damage in four or five days, and that rain would likely fall again in the meantime, so postponement would cause no difficulty. They also stated that the water-watch (*mizuban*) should be suspended for now, with the possibility of requesting it again later. Accordingly, it was formally decided to postpone the following day's rainmaking ritual and to suspend the water-watch. The *jitte* (constable's) junior officials (*wakayaku*) were then summoned and informed of this decision. 3. The matter arose of whether a child in mourning (*imiko*) who had contracted smallpox (*hōsō*) would constitute a source of ritual impurity. The relevant regulations — including the *Fukuki-ryō* (Mourning and Taboo Regulations) and the *Ryō no gige* (Commentaries on the Codes) — were examined, but no provision regarding smallpox as a source of impurity could be found. Since ritual impurity *does* exist under the mourning regulations for shrine priests, shrine priests Masahisa and Hirohisa were summoned and the matter was discreetly inquired of Hayashi-ke Shigetaka. He reported that in a previous year there had also been a mourning child with smallpox, but the shrine rituals were not suspended and were carried out as usual. Therefore, the same approach would be followed this time. However, since the child was so very young and wept and cried on every occasion during the sacred rituals, making it difficult to perform them properly, and since it appeared that the customary prohibitions regarding contact with mourning households and impurities were not being observed in daily life — the matter had come to resemble a normal state of affairs. 4. After the meeting, the accounting officers (*kanjō bugyō*) Yasushige, Shigesue, and Yasuchi, along with the acting scribe Kunikiyo, entered the account books for the months of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th months into the ledger of the shrine officials. 5. When the representatives Naritohisa and Yasusato were about to return home and reported to Lord Hino-Ben, they were told that Mizutani Moku would come out to speak to them and that they should wait. He shortly appeared and told them they should submit their papers and depart. The representatives replied that since this concerned the return of the water, they would return it as soon as instructed, and asked whether they should wait at their lodgings (*nakayado*). Moku replied: "In that case, would it be acceptable if you returned it today?" They replied, "Indeed, we are prepared to return it at any time." He went back inside, apparently to inform the *Tendai sōzu* (transmission official), and presently came back out again. The instructions conveyed were: "If that is the case, revise the inquiry document and the oral statement, removing the phrase 'we wish to return' (*henken shitaku*) and replacing it with 'we are returning' (*henken shi sōrō*)." Having brought writing materials, they immediately revised the document and submitted it. It was received, and they then reported to the *tendō* (transmission official) and withdrew. They then proceeded to the main gate (*gokenkan*) of the Imperial Palace, but as the gate was already closed, they sought out the messenger guard room (*o-tsukaiban beya*), where Nishiike Nuidono Jikitei was on duty. With his assistance, the gate was opened; they were guided through, and the official on duty, Machiguchi Mino-no-kami, came out to receive them. They duly reported the return of the water to him and withdrew. --- 27th Day. [Day of the Rat / *Ne*]. Rainy. 1. Today is the monthly meeting (*tsukidoshi yoriai*).
