Although the standing timber of the mountain is to be deposited as collateral, the contract stipulates that when the mountain timber is to be dealt with, the right of first offer shall be granted to the moneylender. Moreover, as soon as the silver arrives, it is intended that repayment be made first to Marūya and the others. 1. **Regarding the payment to the water officials (*mizu-yakunin*):** It cannot be said that nothing whatsoever should be given. If six hundred *me* is unavailable, then three-tenths, or four hundred *me*, or three hundred *me* — in any case, approximately that amount should be given. However, as the shrine's treasury (*hito-sha*) is completely depleted at this time, it should be levied either on the assessed yield (*taka*) or on the landholdings (*shitaji*) of the shrine priests, collected from among them, pooled for the shrine, and then disbursed. However, the landholdings of the peasants should be excluded, and only the landholdings belonging to the shrine priests should be assessed. If the assessed silver amount turns out to be especially high, a small additional sum should be supplemented from the shrine community's funds. First, the state of the assessed yield of the shrine priests' landholdings in the paddy-field districts should be investigated. On that basis, the matter should be communicated to those concerned, collected together, and disbursed — this was resolved unanimously. 2. **Regarding the matter of Oyama Village:** It was proposed that the matter first be put to the *rōjaku-naka* (the council of senior and junior members). How does the *rōjaku-naka* view this? After consulting among those present, a response should be given by the 12th. Although the shrine community's share of the shrine dues (*sha-nō*) is modest, the matter is of considerable significance for the *rōjaku-naka*, and their views are desired. If, after such consultation, the *rōjaku-naka* comes to agree with the shrine community's position, then the people of Oyama Village should be summoned again, and all the other *honjo* (proprietors) should be asked whether they would consent to assessment by inspection (*mi-kake*); if all respondents agree to assessment by inspection, then the *kami*-estate lands (*shinryō*) should be treated in the same manner. However, if assessment by inspection is not accepted, and there are *honjo* that maintain the previous fixed tax (*jōmen*) system, then the *kami*-estate lands should also [follow accordingly — *one character is illegible*]. In any case, it was deemed that the *rōjaku-naka* should be consulted as soon as possible — even one day sooner — and accordingly a meeting (*sankai*) of the *rōjaku-naka* was scheduled to be held the following afternoon, the 9th, after lunch. 3. **After the assembly's consultation**, wishing to catch three or five sweetfish (*ayu*) for the following day's ritual offering (*go-ryōken*), the group set out for the river. The priests who attended were: Masahisa, Hirohisa, Yasukaku, Furitoshi, Yasuto, Fumiari, and Tetsunori, among others. Gorōtarō, along with hired men Kanzaburō and Kansuke of Yamamoto-chō, were brought along. At the mouth of Hongu, they tried fishing at a different section of the rapids (*se-chigae*), but found no sweetfish and caught only a few rock-lodging fish (*ishi-buse-zakana*). There were no other rapids to try, so Masahisa, Furitoshi, Tetsunori, Yasukaku, and others returned. Hirohisa, Yasuto, and Fumiari, together with Kanzaburō and Kansuke, went directly from past dusk to the Byōbu-iwa (Folding-Screen Rock), where they cast the *karaami* (seine net) from above, but managed to obtain only one sweetfish and five or six small fish. They returned around the first half of the first watch of the night (*shoya-han*, around 11 p.m.) and had a meal of soup made from the rock-lodging fish at the deliberation hall (*hyōgi-sho*), then returned to their lodgings. In total, there were four sweetfish of about three *sun* (approximately 9 cm) in length, which were sent to the fishmonger Gonzaemon's place to be salted until the following morning — intended, of course, for presentation as the next day's ritual offering. The *karaami* net had been borrowed for the shrine community from Harima-no-suke Arinori. The matter of borrowing it was handled by Sanbei, on Yasuto's verbal request. 4. The secretary (*shippitsu*), Dainayasu, composed and wrote out the *norito* (ritual prayers) for the following day's ceremony that evening. As is customary, the draft paper (*an-gami*) was provided by the presiding priest. 5. The exchange officers (*kawase-kata*) — Yasutomo, Shigeki, and Kunikiyo — assembled today. It appears to have been a session for reviewing and settling accounts. --- **9th Day, *I* (Boar) [cyclical day notation], Cloudy.** 1. After breakfast, a thanksgiving prayer service (*kiu hōsai go-kitō*) for answered prayers for rain was held. The presiding priests, monthly duty officers, and five *shōjin tōnin* (ascetic leaders) participated, with one from each unit — the members of the sixth rotation (*roku-ban-shū*) on duty (Yasuto's substitute, Seichi) — attending at the *Heiden* (Offering Hall) to perform one thousand repetitions of the sacred purification rite (*o-harae*). At the Kifune Shrine, one of the two officials in charge, with one person from each unit — the sixth rotation member on duty (Tomiyasu) — performed two hundred repetitions of the purification rite. 2. Today, Yasutomo, Suenaga, and Yasufu gathered regarding the paddy-field matters to conduct an inspection of the landholdings under the jurisdiction of Hongu.
