(Continued from previous text) It was stated that the matter had been heard and acknowledged at ■□ as well. From the Reizei household and Shōbaiin, it was said that they would notify us once others had settled their matters. The domain of Hōkyōji-no-miya is under the administration of Kobori Kazuma, and has been subject to direct land assessment (mitake) for the past ten years.
Item: Regarding the aforementioned matter of Oyama, the document repository was opened and the Oyama納帳 (tribute records) from Genroku 6 [1693] and Kyōhō 12 [1727], as well as diary records from Jōkyō 4 [1687], Jōkyō 5 [1688], and Genroku 6 [1693], were examined. However, since the full details could not be ascertained, it was deemed appropriate to make quiet, informal inquiries to Kobori Kazuma, the chief administrator (moto-jime). Accordingly, since Suōnosuke Okiaki has connections with the relevant family, he was asked to facilitate this, with a request that he meet with the representative who would be coming from the shrine community soon. He immediately went to Okiaki's residence at the meeting hall to inquire on what day and at what time he should come, whereupon Okiaki promptly agreed and said he could come as early as the next day. It was concluded that it would be best to consult after quietly inquiring with Kobori first. If direct land assessment were to be ordered, it would not be limited to just Oyama village—Ono and Nakamura would also make requests one by one, and if the villagers of the main district also came to make such requests in increasing numbers, there would be nothing that could be done. It was therefore decided that after making quiet inquiries, a petition should be considered to the magistrate's office (bugyō-sho).
Item: In the evening, a notification (fure-jō) arrived from Igarashi Gengo. It concerned a person previously circulated about—a boy named Kamekichi, aged 11, son of Nishijin Mumeyo, who had gone missing some time ago but had now apparently turned up. This was circulated as a notice of his reappearance. With the seal of the representative Hiroku-Bodo added, it was forwarded to Reigenji temple.
Item: This evening, the tanomusushi-okuri (rice paddy insect-driving ceremony) was held in seven towns.
Item: Today, rice pounding was held at the Bodo residence. The maidservant of Hiroku and the maidservant of Mitsu (■) came.
Item: Since Rokurobei's son requested to borrow the bamboo palanquin (take-koshi) of the deliberation hall, Gakuaki was informed and the palanquin was lent out. The messenger was Mosaburō.
13th Day: Hour of the Rabbit [around 6 a.m.], clear. Cloudy from after breakfast, with occasional light rain. Heavy rain in the evening.
Item: The shrine community was peaceful. Today, Sanpei brought two tō, seven shō, and four gō of barley as the per-building (munawari) distribution. Accordingly, 35 mon in cash equivalent was □transferred to the meeting hall. Today, a notification arrived from Igarashi: Uchino Heibei's adopted daughter, aged eight, has gone missing.
Item: Cloth (katabira) was sent to Ōtsuya for dyeing. The items were: hanairo (light blue) fine-pattern cloth, double-sided; a small pattern cloth with a mandarin orange and diamond crest at five locations; and a small ayasugi (woven cedar pattern) design. The sample of the small hand towel requested the other day was brought for viewing—one item at 1 momme 1 bu and another at 1 momme. Instructions were sent to price them at 9 bu. Additionally, a small-colored pattern with a little crimson included was requested to be brought the day after tomorrow.
14th Day: Hour of the Dragon [around 8 a.m.]. Heavy rain during the night. Rain stopped from morning, overcast. Today is the Gion Festival.
Item: The shrine community was peaceful. Today, the Superintendent of Repairs, Yoaki, ascended to Kifune [Kibune] mountain. He traveled by bamboo palanquin.
Item: From around the Hour of the Sheep [around 2 p.m.], a heavy evening shower. Rain continued until evening.
Item: Tokunouemon from the south arrived carrying a letter from Shinano-no-suke Sanko. Sanko had persuaded Tokunouemon to agree to settle the ongoing dispute with Kaneme for 50 momme in silver, and Tokunouemon had agreed. Sanko requested that Bodo be sent to convey this verbally to Kaneme's household. Accordingly, Tokunouemon was brought along to Kishu's residence, but as Kaneme was currently away, it was requested that the silver be brought to Sanko's residence the following day, and from there handed to Tokunouemon. After this, Tokunouemon would pay a courtesy visit to Kaneme's household, and it was conveyed that a settlement notice (sumijō) would be submitted to the shrine community. He was then sent home. No reply letter was sent to Sanko; instead, this response was conveyed verbally through Tokunouemon.
Item: Aki-no-kami paid a visit—merely a courtesy call. Kunishi also visited.
Item: Regarding the pregnancy of a maidservant at the Toriimichi household: a dispute was brought forth concerning Hachibei's son from the south, and it was ordered that the matter be handled discreetly by the relevant officials at a lower level. The outcome was that the maidservant was taken as wife by Hachibei's son, with both parties reaching an agreement, and the dispute was thus resolved.
