**(Continued from previous page)**
He was going out of Kyoto, and if he returned late and could not make it in time, he asked that the matter be handled appropriately in his absence. Hodō had left this message while away.
One item: Fifteen small hand towels (kotenugui) were sent over from Ōtsuya, and they were placed in the care of the shrine staff (shokuchū). However, it was replied that if the pattern was not to their liking they could be returned, and if they would suffice, they should be purchased. The price was nine bu per piece.
One item: After the midday meal, a small gathering (shōkikai) was held. Those in attendance: Head Priest Masahisa, Tetsuken, Kiho, Hodō, the acting secretary Naoan, Gakuken (at the meeting hall), Hakkyū, and Shiken. The person in charge of the firewood mountain was absent. Hokaku was absent as he had gone out of Kyoto. The ward officials (gyōji) of the Seven Wards submitted a petition stating that wild boars had been causing extraordinary damage to fields and paddies, making life very difficult. When the hunters were instructed to act, they replied that the boars had taken refuge in the embankment thickets belonging to the Tokugawa government (gokōgi), making it impossible to hunt there. The petition requested that the boars be driven out by hunting as quickly as possible. After deliberation, it was decided that the matter could not simply be left alone, and a messenger was dispatched today to Kadokura Heiji. It was determined that arrangements should be made for hunting in the embankment thickets as early as tomorrow, and letters were sent to two assistants (tedai) on behalf of the general representatives (sōdai). The messenger Ichibei was also verbally instructed. The copy of the letter reads as follows:
> I humbly address you by letter. During this season of intense heat, I trust that all of you continue to be in good health and to carry out your duties admirably — I consider this most praiseworthy. Now, it has come to our attention that wild boars have taken refuge within the government-controlled thickets and are causing damage to fields and paddies. The farmers of this area have come forward with a petition. Accordingly, we humbly report to you and request that the boars be driven out by hunting from within the embankment thickets. As matters stand, we wish to have them expelled as quickly as possible. If this request is granted, we would ask that your officials be dispatched as usual so that hunting may begin early tomorrow morning. We have therefore written to you as above. Respectfully yours.
>
> The 16th day of the 6th month.
>
> Although we are well aware that you are occupied with many duties, the damage to the fields and paddies is causing extreme hardship, and we have thus been compelled to write in this manner. We humbly ask for your favorable response. Respectfully yours.
>
> Address: To Kawasaki Genzō; To Katō Onouemon.
> From: Matsushita Daizennosuke and Okamoto Harima-no-kami, General Representatives of the Kamigamo Shrine Community.
The above letter was placed in a document box and sent with Ichibei as carrier. It was conveyed to the meeting hall that upon receipt of a reply, if the request was granted, the farmers should be notified that hunting would indeed proceed the following day.
One item: The silver from Chikuzen-no-kami's intermediary transaction arrived. The question was raised whether it should be divided and disbursed as previously directed. It was confirmed that this matter had already been discussed and decided at the previous gathering, and moreover, since merchants had been pressing for payment daily during this period, it was decided that payment should proceed accordingly.
One item: Tomorrow, Hoshō and Hodō were to call on Soga Kizaemon, the assistant (tedai) of Kobori Kazuma. It was arranged that they would also bring along the festival accounts ledger (omatsuri kanjōchō) for the occasion. The meeting hall was notified to have attendants ready early after the morning meal.
One item: A joint letter from □Gozaemon and Utsuki Yaheita, sent from Edo (Kōfu), arrived via the residence caretaker (rusuii) of Lord Ii Kamon-no-kami's mansion, Kitamura Hachirojūemon. The letter was addressed to Mori Nakatsukasa and Okamoto Harima-no-kami, and was received accordingly.
One item: The attendant (nakama) Ichibei returned at the lower part of the Hour of the Monkey (around 5 p.m.) and reported the following: Upon calling at Kadokura Jinpei's residence, the assistants there stated that the thicket under their charge was sparse and open enough that, let alone boars, even dogs or cats would be visible if present, so it was unlikely to be their thicket. They suggested it was surely the thicket under the charge of Kadokura Yoichi. Ichibei then replied: "Indeed, that must be the case — it appears to be an error on the part of the shrine officials. However, since this location is far away, by the time I return and come back, it will hardly be possible to manage things by tomorrow. Since the fields are being ravaged, we wish to drive the boars out as soon as possible. Even though it is an inconvenience to ask a favor in such close quarters, please would you send a letter on our behalf to the officials of Yoichi's household?" To this, the reply was: "That is indeed reasonable — we shall send a letter." Accordingly, a letter was obtained from Kawasaki Genzō to Miyajima Yozaemon, the resident official (doiyaku) and assistant to Kadokura Yoichi; Ichibei proceeded directly to Yoichi's residence, where an official came out, met with Ichibei, heard the matter in detail, and then drafted a reply to Genzō, saying: "Since the matter is as described, we will not send a separate reply directly to the shrine community." Ichibei therefore also went to the lodgings of Aburanokoji Heiji. He asked whether someone could be sent from that party as well, to which the reply was: "There is no need for us to send anyone." Ichibei then said: "That may be so, but if the boars are driven out and retreat into your controlled thickets, there would be nothing to be done about it." To this the reply was: "That is indeed a reasonable point. In that case, we shall send someone."
The copy of the reply letter is as follows:
> I have received and read your letter. Although we are in the height of summer's heat, I am delighted to hear that you continue to be in good health. Now, regarding the matter... (continues on the next page).
