**[Visit to Lord Hino — Continued from Previous Page]** (Mizutani Moku came out and they waited for a while,) as they had been told to wait. It appeared that the matter had been communicated to the Imperial Messenger (*gidensō*) as well, and after further waiting, it seemed that some preliminary inquiry had been made. Thereafter, the word came down that on this occasion as well, a ruling could not be issued, and the petition was returned. They duly reported this outcome to the Imperial Messenger and withdrew. --- **[Circular Regarding the Fish Catch at Rokugō on the Twenty-Fourth]** Regarding the circular for the fish catch at Rokugō the day after tomorrow (the twenty-fourth): it was decided that a separate document would be sent to Daitoku-ji. This evening, after review by the scribe, it was written up. It is scheduled to be dispatched early tomorrow morning. --- ## Twenty-Third Day — Kinoto-Ushi (乙丑) — Clear **[Errand to Satsuma-ya in Muromachi and Other Business]** Today, Yokurō was hired and sent to Satsuma-ya in Muromachi. Thirty eggplants were sent as a midsummer (*doyō*) greeting, and another thirty were sent to the street vendor. A reply letter from Hodō to Lady Osen (O-some) was also dispatched. --- **[Circular to Rokugō]** This morning, a circular regarding the fish catch and weir operations at Rokugō was sent out. --- **[Notice from Igarashi Gōgo]** A notice (*furejō*) arrived from Igarashi Gōgo. It stated that the whereabouts of Shimo, the adopted daughter of Jūbē of Ōsakaya in Uchino-Aioichō, previously mentioned in an earlier notice, had been ascertained. The representatives Hirokyu and Hokaku affixed their seals. --- **[Small Assembly at Midday]** At midday, a small assembly (*ko-yoriai*) was convened. Those in attendance were: the Head Priest, Masahisa, Hirokyu, Sumiho, Fumitaka, Hokaku, and Hodō. The acting scribe was Kunikiyo. Tetsutaka was absent due to illness. At the assembly hall, Gakunori made the following announcement: Yesterday, Yoaki descended from the mountain by boat (*kibune*). On this occasion, a letter arrived from Chikuzen-no-suke, the duty officer at Kibune. The substance of the letter was as follows: The sixty cedar trees growing on shrine land to the east of the Kajitori Bridge had been felled, reportedly having been sold by Jōju-in temple. Three'emon of Kibune was sent to inspect the site, where it was found that a man named Tanji, a resident of Kibune Valley arranged by Jōju-in, had facilitated the purchase by a man named Kurama Sōjirō, who then felled the trees. Three'emon reported: "These cedar trees were planted in earlier years by the former Jōju-in. At that time, he said: 'As the shrine land is lying wastefully vacant, as a service to the deity (*myōjin*) we should plant cedars; they will be of use in the future. I will donate the cedar saplings; you all should come together and plant them, for this is a matter of service to the entire community.' I myself went and planted them. The area to the west of the river where the trifoliate orange (*karatachi*) grows has long been understood to be land on loan to Jōju-in, though I cannot say so with certainty. The cedar trees felled this time are entirely on shrine land; there is no doubt that they are the shrine's trees." [remainder damaged/unclear] In light of this, the small assembly reviewed maps of the Kibune area and other documents, but as the matter remained unclear, it was decided to consult the annual duty officers and others, and further investigation would be conducted. Tomorrow, Three'emon of Kibune is to be called in privately from the assembly hall, and his account of the matter is to be heard in full detail. --- **[Report of Nagato-no-Kami's Inspection]** Regarding Nagato-no-Kami's joint inspection conducted with the Kibune mountain duty officers over the past few days: a total of sixteen *todo* (Sakhalin fir) trees were reported today. The matter is to be discussed further at the next assembly. Today as well, timber allocation (*kikuwari*) work was carried out at the Council Hall. --- ## Twenty-Fourth Day — Hinoto-Tora (丙寅) — Clear; Brief Shower until the Hour of the Hare **[Fish Catch for the Divine Offerings at the Otoshire-kai — Rokugō Weir River]** Today, the fish catch for the divine offerings (*jingu*) at the Otoshire assembly (*otodai-kai*) was conducted at the Rokugō weir river. The circular had been sent around yesterday, but as there was a sudden shower this morning, it was thought that a postponement notice should be sent out; however, as the sky cleared in the meantime and the river magistrate (*kawa-bugyō*) declared that the fish catch would proceed, participants headed out from just after the Hour of the Dragon (around 8 a.m.). The monthly duty officer was Hirokyu; the head of scribes and *zassho* administrator was Hokaku; the *sata-nin* (administrator) was Kaneta; the acting river magistrate was Seifu. The river magistrate Kanetaka's group consisted of Houshi, Chōki, Kiyotomo, Naoharu, Yataka, and Tatsuno-suke Dayū — five in total, making seven together with the river magistrates. The locations were Ikeda, Ichinoi, Mogai-i, Hori, and Ogawa. Those who joined at midday were: the monthly officer, Sumiho, Hirokyu, and *zassho* administrator Hodō; the *sata-nin* was Michikiyo. Also present: the river magistrates and the Kanetaka group;朝日前 (*Asahimae*); and Ōno, Koyama, and Nakamura. Attendants (*nakama*) and servants (*komono*), as well as those carrying the tea lunchboxes, brought two thin rush mats (*usube*), and all wore *haori* jackets and field hakama (*no-bakama*). Around midday, a sudden shower struck. It is said that everyone got wet while damming the Horikawa river. The *nakama* was Gonbē; the servant's substitute was □-hei; the tea lunchbox carrier was Naka-no-Denhachi. Today's river magistrates [continued on the next page]…
