△深川の富士見橋に、二の組鳶人足（とびにんそく）の善五郎という者がいた。地震によって自分の家が潰れたが、妻子を助け出したところ、幸いにも怪我はなかった。そのとき、隣から大きな物音が聞こえてきたので、鳶口を持って急いで駆けつけてみると、まさに小笠原左京殿の下屋敷が、玄関だけを残してすべて崩れ潰れており、その中から泣き叫ぶ声が絶え間なく聞こえてきた。善五郎は力の限りに大木・板・瓦などを跳ね除けて、侍女（腰元）九人を救い出し、さらに散乱した瓦礫の中から女性十二人を救い出した。すると老女が「早く妙月院殿（城主のご母公である）をお助けしてくれ」と言うので、善五郎は心得て、急いで潰れた家の中へ潜り込み、ようやく尼公を探し出して助け出し、侍女に介添えさせて玄関にお座りいただいた。それから茶の間その他三か所の火を消し、さらに十一人を救い出した。ただし、このうち五人は即死であった。このとき上屋敷から早馬が到来し、ご無事であることをお祝い申し上げる際に、右の善五郎が救い出した旨をお伝えしたところ、同月五日に上屋敷から善五郎がお召し出しを受け、その場でのご褒美として金百両ほど、また永代に十五人扶持をもって作事方頭取役を仰せつけられた。そもそも今度の異変は、万人にとって難儀なことであり、誰が利益を受けようか（誰も得をする者などいない）。しかるに、この善五郎などは、その志すところが極めて誠実（至直）で、俗に言う「気が利いた」者であり、この善五郎が来なければ三か所から火が起きて、いかなる災害があったか計り知れない。善いことには善い報いがあり、悪いことには悪い報いがある。天地の照覧はまことに明らかである。人間の浮き沈みは、すべてその人の心の中にあると言うべきであろう。

△扇橋近所にて、伊賀様下屋敷・秋元様中屋敷・隠岐様下屋敷・永井様中屋敷・越後様下屋敷・大黒田様下屋敷、この辺りは武家屋敷・町家ともに崩れが多く、すべてを記すことは難しい。
△上橋辺にて、仙台様蔵屋敷・久世様中屋敷などで、また町家も大破損。河岸の石垣なども落ちなかった所はほとんどない。同所の牧野備前様中屋敷・秋田様・朽木様・本多日向様なども大破損。
△同所の北方、万年橋近辺は大破にて崩れが多い。同じく本所一ツ目橋の石垣が崩れ、しばらくの間は渡し舟による通行となった。△同所の弁天社は大破し、その他の諸碑なども悉く崩れた。
㊅新大橋東方の御舟蔵は異状なし。同所前の町より出火し、同所の舟役屋敷・八幡旅所・同御旅町の再幸寺が焼けた。同所南方の要津寺・小屋敷数軒が焼けた。六軒堀町三丁・八名川町二丁、同所の御籾蔵は半焼。一か所が潰れた。歯神社は火の中にあって残った。小屋敷数軒が焼けた。この辺りは悉く崩れた。

△ At Fujimi Bridge in Fukagawa, there lived a man named Zengoro, a fireman's laborer (*tobi-ninsoku*) of the Second Company. When the earthquake struck, his own house collapsed, but he managed to pull his wife and children out to safety without injury. Then, hearing a great commotion from next door, he grabbed his fireman's hook (*tobi*) and rushed over, only to find that the entire mansion of Lord Ogasawara Sakyō — save for the entrance hall — had completely collapsed. From within the rubble came the continuous sound of weeping and screaming. Exerting all his strength, Zengoro threw aside great timbers, boards, and roof tiles, rescuing nine ladies-in-waiting (*koshimoto*), and then pulling out twelve more women from the wreckage. An elderly woman cried out, "Please, quickly, save Lady Myōgetsu-in!" *(Note: the mother of the domain lord)* Understanding at once, Zengoro crawled urgently into the collapsed structure, and after a painstaking search, found the nun-princess and brought her to safety, having her attendants escort her to a seat in the entrance hall. He then extinguished fires burning in three locations — the tea room and elsewhere — and rescued a further eleven people. Of these, however, five had already died instantly.
At this time, a fast horse arrived from the upper residence with congratulations on Lady Myōgetsu-in's safety, and it was reported that Zengoro had been the one to rescue her. On the fifth day of the same month, Zengoro was summoned to the upper residence, where he was rewarded on the spot with approximately one hundred *ryō* in gold, and was appointed permanently to the post of head of the construction works office (*sakuji-kata tōdori*), with a stipend of fifteen persons' worth of rations (*fuchi*) for life.
This disaster was a universal hardship — who among us could be said to have benefited? And yet this Zengoro, whose motives were wholly sincere and straightforward — what one might call "a man of ready wit and good sense" — had he not appeared, fires would have broken out from three separate locations, and what catastrophe might have followed is beyond reckoning. Good deeds bring good rewards; evil deeds bring evil retribution. The watchful eye of Heaven and Earth is indeed clear and bright. One may truly say that a person's rise or fall in this world lies entirely within their own heart.

△ In the vicinity of Uwabashi: the storehouse residence of the Sendai domain, the middle residence of Lord Kuze, and numerous townspeople's houses suffered heavy damage. Scarcely a single stone wall along the riverbanks remained intact. In the same area, the middle residence of Lord Makino Bizen, as well as those of Lord Akita, Lord Kuchiki, and Lord Honda Hyūga, all suffered serious damage.
△ To the north of the same area, near Mannen Bridge, there was extensive destruction and many collapses. Similarly, the stone wall of the One-Eye Bridge (*Hitotsumeido*) in Honjo collapsed, and for a time the crossing was served by ferry. △ The Benten Shrine in the same area was heavily damaged, and numerous stone monuments (*shohi*) were completely destroyed.
㊅ East of Shinhashi (New Bridge): the shogunal boat storehouse (*o-funakura*) sustained no damage. A fire broke out from the town in front of the same area, burning down the boat officials' residence (*funa-yaku yashiki*), the Hachiman temporary shrine (*tabidokoro*), the Saiko-ji Temple in the same shrine's approach town, and several small residences in the southern part, including Yōshin-ji Temple. Rokkenhorichō 3-chōme and Yanagawa-chō 2-chōme also burned. The shogunal rice storehouse (*o-momigura*) in the same area was half-destroyed by fire, one section completely collapsed. The Hagami Shrine survived amid the flames. Several small residences burned. Nearly all structures in this area collapsed.
㊆ On the opposite (east) bank of the same river: Kita-Morishita-chō 3-chōme burned, the fire stopping at Chōkei-ji Temple in the same area. To the south: Kita-Rokkenhorichō, Minami-Rokkenhorichō 4-chōme, and Minami-Morishita-chō all burned. The Shinmei Shrine survived amid the flames.
