一、根津七軒町に屑買いで平吉という者がいた。妻のかつ、娘のはると言う者は今年十七歳で養女である。妹のくらは十六歳で実の子である。このはるは心根が良く、見た目も良く、孝心も深かったが、夫婦ともに邪心があり、我が子の愚かさを知らなかった。ここで夫婦が密かに話し合ったことをどのようにして聞いたのか、家主の次兵衛が両人を呼び寄せて言うには、「このはる女は孝心深く、かつ義理のある子である。妹のくらは実の子であるから、売っても差し支えない。前金はすでに受け取った由である。こちらから返し、理を言って遣わせ」と言ったので、どうにもならず、腹立ちのまま金五両を姉のはるに持たせてやった。ちょうどこの時に例の地震があった。平吉方は一番に潰れ、親子三人とも崩れた家の下敷きになったが、隣家から火災が起こって皆焼け死んだ。姉のはるは家主の方にいて無事であった。これは常日頃から継子を憎み、さらに遊女に売ろうとした不実を、諸大王が戒め給うところである。恐るべし、慎むべし。

One account: In Nezu Shichikenmachi, there was a ragpicker named Heikichi. His wife Katsu had a daughter named Haru, who was seventeen years old and an adopted child. His younger sister Kura was sixteen years old and his natural child. This Haru was kind-hearted, attractive in appearance, and deeply filial, but the couple were both malicious and unaware of their own child's foolishness. Somehow the landlord Jibei came to learn of the couple's secret discussions, and summoned them both, saying: "This Haru is a deeply filial child of integrity. As for the younger sister Kura, since she is your natural child, there is no obstacle to selling her. I understand you have already received the advance payment. I shall return it and explain the proper reasoning to them." With no recourse and filled with anger, they sent the elder sister Haru away with five ryō in gold. It was precisely at this moment that the earthquake struck. Heikichi's household was the first to be crushed, and all three family members were buried under the collapsed house. Then a fire broke out from a neighboring house and they all burned to death. The elder sister Haru was at the landlord's place and survived safely. This was the punishment bestowed by the Ten Kings of the Underworld upon those who harbored daily hatred toward a stepchild and moreover attempted to sell her into prostitution. Fear this!
