（前ページからの続き）停泊していた大船は突然三尺ほど空中へ持ち上がったかと思うと、たちまち数百の雷鳴のような轟音とともに激しく震動したが、海上はかえって静かで、物寂しいこと限りなかった。やがて江戸の各所に火の手が上がり、騒乱の様子であったため、主家の安否ばかりが気がかりで、漁具をそのまま捨て置いて江戸へ駆け戻り、さまざまに働いたことを、ついでながらここに記しておく。
一、私の友人小泉氏は、上総の方に用件があって滞在していたところ、あの大地震で江戸表が大火になったとの噂を聞き、用事を捨て置いて急いで帰路についた。元八幡まで来た頃は十月四日の夜、丑の刻（午前二時頃）であった。村の外れで、年の頃二十四、五歳の女が、二歳ほどの幼児を抱いて走ってくるのに出くわしたので、提灯を掲げて見ようとしたが、その容貌は賤しくはない女であるものの、その足の速さは矢のようであったため、とても見止めることができなかった。さらに五丁ほど行ったところで、「丸にサ」の印をつけた提灯を照らした若者五人が現れ、小泉と行き合い、「幼い子を連れて行った者を見かけませんでしたか」と尋ねたので、先ほどの女のことを話すと、「さては、あれがそうか。今から追いかけても追いつくまい。さあ、引き返そう」と、もと来た道へ引き返した。そこで小泉がその訳を尋ねると、「この村の左十郎の妻・よしという者が、地震の時に梁の下敷きになって死んだ。二歳の幼児を誰かに預けようと思っても、騒乱の中では預かる人もなく、見殺しにするのは不憫だということで、もらい乳をさせているが思うようにはいかない。父親（夫）は心痛のあまり気も絶え絶えである。そういうわけで、夜ごとその子を連れ出し、十分に乳を飲ませては、家の中のどこともなく送り戻している。まったく不思議なことである」と語った。これを聞いて小泉は、先ほどの女の様子からさまざまに推し量り、あれは亡き母の霊魂が我が子への愛着から（以下次ページへ続く）

(Continued from previous page) The large ship anchored there was suddenly lifted about three shaku into the air, and in an instant, the earth shook violently with a roar like hundreds of thunderclaps simultaneously. Yet the sea remained strangely calm and desolately quiet. Soon, fires broke out in various parts of Edo and the scene became one of great turmoil. Fearing for the safety of his master's household above all else, he abandoned his fishing gear and ran back to Edo, where he rendered various assistance — this too I record here in passing.
One account: My friend Mr. Koizumi had been staying in Kazusa province on business when he heard rumors that Edo had been struck by the great earthquake and consumed by a massive fire. Abandoning his affairs, he hastened back along the road. By the time he reached Moto-Hachiman, it was the Hour of the Ox (around 2 a.m.) on the night of the 4th day of the 10th month. At the outskirts of a village, he encountered a woman of about twenty-four or twenty-five years of age, running with a child of about two years old in her arms. He raised his lantern to get a better look — she was not a woman of low station, but she moved as swift as an arrow, making it impossible to stop her. About five chō further along, five young men appeared carrying a lantern marked with the "Maru ni Sa" crest. They met Koizumi and asked, "Did you happen to see someone passing with a small child?" He told them about the woman he had just seen, to which they replied, "So that was her. There is no use chasing after her now. Let us turn back." And they returned the way they had come. Koizumi then asked them to explain, and they told him: "A woman named Yoshi, wife of Sajūrō in this village, was killed when a beam fell on her during the earthquake. Though people wished to find someone to care for her two-year-old child, in the chaos there was no one to take the infant, and to leave the child to die seemed too pitiful. A wet nurse was found, but it has not gone well. The father is so overcome with grief he can barely go on. And so, night after night, someone takes the child out and has it nursed to its fill, then brings it back somewhere in the house — though to where, no one can say. It is a most strange affair." Upon hearing this, Koizumi pieced together what he had observed of the woman and concluded that she must be the departed spirit of the mother, drawn back by her love for her child — (continued on next page)
