一今度地震より火災の中に吉原江戸町某といへる女郎屋
の亭主ハ頓智の体にて火難を脱ん為に穴蔵へ十四人の
遊女を入其身もはいりふたをさせ安全の体也扨火しつまり
てふたを明中を見るに何れも残なく死居たり各忙然と
して惘（あき）れるのミ此儀よき量ににたれ共大に愚也魚ハ水
中に居て水をしるす人ハ気中に住して気をしるす若
人水中に落入水を多く呑て腹中気の満る時ハ死す
又少しも気の通しなき時ハ死有穴蔵ハ木金等の類諸
非情の赦ハなるへし有情の気あるもの何そ暫も枝 つつき
其上焼木落重り土性のしつ気を変し大熱と成ゆへ其
苦悩百倍して死凡急変に臨ミてハ心中将動すへし然
れとも右等の災害心付さるへき因之渡世の禁とす
一同所京町某ハ火を脱んと息を限りに日本堤迄駈出しか
此土手地震にて長三間又ハ五間も裂（さけ）たり其間へ足を踏込動

八丁堀北島町の貸家のある家主は、（地震により）引き抜かれるように一軒が全壊し、土蔵も微塵となり、怪我人も出た。ところがその両隣は無事で、瓦一枚落ちることもなかった。これはいかなる因果によって差別（差異）が生じた地震であろうか。右の両隣は善行を積んだ人々であるとみなされるべきであろう。
一、今度の地震と火災の中で、吉原江戸町のある女郎屋の亭主は、機転の利く様子で火難を逃れるために穴蔵（地下の蔵）へ十四人の遊女を入れ、自身も入ってふたをさせ、安全であると思っていた。さて火が静まってからふたを開けて中を見ると、誰も残らず死んでいた。皆は茫然としてあきれるばかりであった。この考えは良い判断に似ているが、大いに愚かなことである。魚は水中にいて水を知らず、人は気（空気）の中に住して気を知らない。もし人が水中に落ちて水を多く飲み、腹中に気が満ちるときは死ぬ。また少しも気が通わないときも死ぬ。穴蔵は木や金属などの無情の物（生命のないもの）には良いかもしれない。しかし有情（生きとし生けるもの）の気があるものに、どうして少しの間でも（閉じ込めることができようか）。その上、焼けた木が落ちて重なり、土性の湿気が変じて大きな熱となったために、その苦悩は百倍にも増して死んだ。およそ急な変事に臨んでは、心中を動揺させてはならない。しかしながら右のような災害については気をつけないわけにはいかない。これをもって渡世上の戒めとする。

In Hatchobori Kitajima-cho, a certain rental house owner had one house completely destroyed as if pulled apart, with a storehouse reduced to rubble, and injuries among residents. Yet the houses on both sides were completely unharmed, without even a single roof tile falling. By what karma was such a distinction made in this earthquake? The two neighboring houses should be regarded as belonging to people of virtuous conduct.
One account: During the earthquake and fires, the proprietor of a brothel in Yoshiwara Edo-cho, showing quick wit, placed fourteen courtesans into an underground cellar to escape the fire, entered it himself, and had the lid closed, believing they would be safe. However, when the fire subsided and the lid was opened, every one of them was dead without exception. Everyone was left speechless with astonishment. This plan resembled a good judgment but was in fact greatly foolish. Fish live in water yet do not know water; humans live in air yet do not know air. If a person falls into water and swallows much of it, filling their belly with air (displacing it), they die. Likewise, when no air circulates at all, death follows. An underground cellar may serve well for inanimate things such as wood and metal. But how could a living, breathing creature survive even a short while in such a place? Moreover, burning timber fell and piled up above, transforming the damp earthen nature of the soil into intense heat, multiplying their suffering a hundredfold until death. In general, one must not let the mind be thrown into confusion when sudden calamity strikes. Nevertheless, one cannot fail to take heed of such disasters as described above. Let this serve as a warning for conducting oneself through life.
One account: A resident of Kyomachi in the same district (Yoshiwara) ran breathlessly all the way to Nihon Tsutsumi (the Japan Embankment) to escape the fire, but the embankment had been split open by the earthquake in lengths of three to five ken.
