役密に嘲笑て彼荷物を渡したるゆへ是を請取かへり猶
又同役其外へ大地震のあらんよしを告る何れも笑て何条其
義あるへきなどいふて取敢ず其夜果して大地震有重役
の土蔵ハ揺崩し前言的中す嘲笑たる人恥たるなり幸にし
て火災は逃たれ共若火難あらハ一物も残所なし嗚呼危

一本所永倉町篠崎某なる人遊漁を好十月二日の夜ずゝこと
いへるものにて鰻をとらんと河筋所々をあさるにしきりに鯰
騒鰻一ッも得す唯鯰三尾を得て倩（つら〳〵）思ふやう鯰の騒く時ハ
必地震有といふに心付て漁を止帰宅して庭上に筵を敷
家財道具を出して異変の備をなせり其妻ハ不審密に
笑之然るに其夜大地震也住居ハ悉く潰れけれ共諸器物は
更に損せず扨又同夜近辺の人是も漁に行鯰の騒たるを
見なから帰宅をせず又獲物も少き上家居より家財道具を

ある某藩の家臣が在府中に本所あたりの藩邸に住んでいた。ところが、十月二日の朝、気になることがあり、重役の某に告げて言うには、「今朝、井戸の水が濁り、潮の気配がある。これはきっと大地震の前兆である。あらかじめ預けてある荷物を返してください。地震の際には土蔵は頼りにできません。どうぞご用心ください」と申し上げた。しかし重役はひそかに笑い、その荷物を返してやったので、この人はそれを受け取って帰り、さらにまた同役や他の者たちにも大地震があるであろうことを告げた。誰もが笑って、「そんなことがあるものか」などと言って取り合わなかった。ところがその夜、果たして大地震が起き、重役の土蔵は揺れ崩れ、前もって言った通りとなった。笑っていた人たちは恥じ入ったのである。幸いにして火災は免れたものの、もし火災が起きていたなら、一つも残るものはなかったであろう。ああ、危ないことであった。
本所永倉町の篠崎某という人は、釣りや漁を好んでいた。十月二日の夜、「ずずこ」と呼ばれるものを使って鰻を獲ろうと、川沿いのあちこちを探り歩いたが、しきりに鯰が騒ぐばかりで鰻は一匹も獲れず、ただ鯰を三尾得るのみであった。つらつら思うに、「鯰が騒ぐ時には必ず地震があると言うではないか」と気付き、漁をやめて帰宅し、庭に筵を敷いて家財道具を外に出し、異変に備えた。妻はこれを不審に思い、ひそかに笑っていた。ところがその夜、大地震が起きた。住居はことごとく潰れたが、外に出していた諸々の器物はまったく損なわれなかった。さて、同じ夜、近所の人もまた漁に出て、鯰が騒いでいるのを見ながらも帰宅せず、獲物も少なかった上に、家の中から家財道具を（取り出すことができなかった）……（以下次頁に続く）

A retainer of a certain lord was stationed in Edo and lived in the domain's residence in the Honjo area. On the morning of the 2nd day of the 10th month, noticing something of concern, he informed a senior official, saying: "This morning, the water in the well has become murky and carries a briny smell. This is surely a sign of a great earthquake. Please return the belongings I have stored with you. In the event of an earthquake, a storehouse (dozō) cannot be relied upon. Please take care." However, the senior official secretly laughed at him and returned the belongings. The man received them back and returned home, then went on to warn fellow officials and others of the impending great earthquake. Everyone laughed, saying things like "How could such a thing happen?" and paid no heed. Yet that very night, a great earthquake struck. The senior official's storehouse collapsed in the shaking, and everything the man had predicted came true. Those who had laughed were put to shame. Fortunately, they escaped fire, but had there been a fire, not a single thing would have remained. Alas, how perilous it was!
A man named Shinozaki of Nagakura-chō in Honjo was fond of fishing. On the night of the 2nd day of the 10th month, he was using a device called a "zuzuko" to try to catch eel, searching along various stretches of the river, but catfish kept stirring about wildly and not a single eel could be caught — only three catfish were obtained. Pondering the matter carefully, he recalled that "when catfish grow restless, there will surely be an earthquake," and taking heed of this, he stopped fishing, returned home, spread mats in the garden, brought out his household belongings and furniture, and prepared for some unusual event. His wife thought this strange and secretly laughed at him. However, that very night, a great earthquake struck. Their dwelling was completely destroyed, but all the household items that had been brought outside were not damaged in the least. Now, on that same night, neighbors who had also gone fishing — seeing the catfish in a commotion — did not return home, and not only did they catch little, but they were unable to bring their household belongings out from their homes...
