Official Business Room Records 1. On the 5th day of the 7th month of Jōkyō 3 (1686), the twenty men of the tile gate guard who had been relieved of their duty at Taiko Gate were ordered to serve day and night rounds, one person each in ten shifts. Senior Retainers on monthly duty Hayashi Gozaemon and Matsubara Shirobei, along with their colleagues serving at Geba Gate guard and Kiritte Gate assistant guard, were also ordered to serve at Taiko Gate guard. The assignments for night rounds, day rounds, and guard duties at the three gates were communicated to Court Announcers Ōtani Sukeroku and Suzuki Tamiya. Taiko Gate 1. One Senior Retainer each on duty rotation, five men from the unit, with two on upper duty. Since this is a checkpoint post, there are two on upper duty. Day and night both require two men [note in red margin], plus two additional for meal relief. However, since it is difficult for Senior Retainers to serve at guard posts, what was announced at the Council Chamber on the 11th day of the intercalary 8th month of Genroku 4 (1691) was that normally Senior Retainers would be excused from Taiko Gate guard duty, and as recorded in the ledger, Senior Retainers would join Geba Gate guard duty and serve additional duty at Kiritte Gate. From this time, retainers (yoriki) regularly serve guard duty at Taiko Gate. From 7 o'clock on New Year's Eve until the 7th day of the new year, Senior Retainers serve day and night. However, when there are important castle affairs or foreign envoys, Senior Retainers serve. When retainers are on guard duty: two Senior Ashigaru on upper duty, one below the gate. However, at night there are two. Additionally, extra personnel on duty during the day: two. The same applies during martial arts demonstrations. 1. Decorative equipment as at Geba [note in red] includes five bows, five quivers, ten arrows with metal points. This portion was announced on the 15th day of the 7th month of Genroku 16 (1703) and implemented from the 18th. [Note in red] Everything the same as Geba Gate; refer to the Geba Gate provisions. Taiko Gate Regulations 1. Retainers under the group commanders shall serve three during the day and two at night. They shall inform the off-duty ashigaru and thoroughly examine any suspicious persons entering or exiting. Even if claiming to be on official business, passage shall not be granted carelessly. However, since Taiko Gate is a Senior Retainer guard post, off-duty personnel shall assign Senior Ashigaru. In all matters, follow the instructions of those on upper duty, and ensure there are no impolite or improper behaviors by giving constant instructions to this effect. 1. The weapons at the gate guard post - five bows, twenty firearms, and ten spears in the custody of Nakagawa Heitazaemon, along with other items - shall all be carefully displayed. 1. The gate opens at 6 o'clock in the morning and closes at 6 o'clock in the evening. However, when proceeding to the main keep, the great gate shall be opened. Normally, only the small gate shall be kept open. 1. Palanquins and vehicles of any kind shall not be permitted passage. However, within temple precincts, according to precedent, vehicles may proceed to the main keep bridge for New Year's visits and other occasions. [Note in red] B
