冷（すさま）じ爰（こゝ）に或人（あるひと）戸（と）を開（ひら）きて見れば水 面上（おもて）にかゝりて近付難（ちかづきがた）し戸
を閉（とぢ）て夜（よ）の明（あく）るを待（まち）既（すで）に夜明る頃（ころ）水 甚（はなは）だ減（げん）じたり人々水の闘（たゝかひ）

◯神奈川（かながは）より海手（うみて）芒新田（すゝきしんでん）に一奇話（いつきわ）あり其名（そのな）を太郎兵衛（たろべゑ）と云（い）へる
富（とめ）る百性（ひやくしやう）有（あり）しが先年（せんねん）の江戸の地震（ぢしん）の後（のち）恐（おそ）ろしき事に思ひ自（おの）
己（れ）金銭（きんせん）に不足（ふそく）なければ早速（さつそく）家を建直（たてなほ）し太（ふと）き梁（むなぎ）を取退（とりの）け細（ほそ）

（前ページより続く）…凄まじく、ある人が戸を開けて見ると、水が水面に覆いかかって近づきがたい状態であった。戸を閉めて夜の明けるのを待っていると、既に夜明け頃には水が大いに減っていた。人々は「水が闘ったのであろう」と言い合ったようである。
◯神奈川から海側にある芒新田（すすきしんでん）に、一つの奇妙な話がある。太郎兵衛という名の裕福な百姓がいたが、先年の江戸の地震の後、ひどく恐ろしい思いをしたため、金銭には不自由しないからとすぐさま家を建て直し、太い梁を取り除いて細いものに替え、瓦を下ろして茅葺きにした。その用心の素早さに、誰もが舌を巻いたものである。しかるに、この度の大風で屋根をそのまま吹き取られてしまい、他の家はそれほど難儀しなかったのに、太郎兵衛は人一倍難儀したとの噂である。またその近所に善助という者がいて、祖父の代から困窮しており、家の普請もできなかったため、納屋や物置は掘立柱で建て、屋根は自分で縄をもって結わえ、雨露・霜

・雪をしのいでいた。さて、この度の大風では、村中の物置が吹き倒され、あるいは屋根を吹きめくられ、さらにその上、高潮が押し上げてきて、潰れた物置を引きずって行ったため、蓄えていた味噌・沢庵、その他の軽い諸道具を失って難儀する者が多かった。その中にあって、善助の物置は土中に埋めた柱であったから、一品も流れて行かず、屋根はもとより手づくろいの縄がけにしてあったから、これまたわずかな破損のみで無事に過ごしたとのことである。これを思うに、高野山の長者の万灯は、ともすれば暗くなることもあるが、貧しい者の一灯は絶えず明るいと聞く。貧にも徳があり、富んでいるがゆえにかえって難儀を招くこともある。後の人への心得として、そのままを書き記した。

◯In Susuki Shinden, a coastal area from Kanagawa, there is a remarkable story. There was a wealthy farmer by the name of Tarōbee. After the earthquake in Edo in recent years, having been terribly frightened, and having no shortage of money, he immediately rebuilt his house: he removed the thick ridge beams and replaced them with thinner ones, took down the roof tiles and re-roofed with thatch. Everyone was astonished by the swiftness of his precautions. However, in this recent great storm, his roof was blown clean off in one piece; while other houses did not suffer so greatly, it is said that Tarōbee suffered more than anyone else. Furthermore, nearby there lived a man called Zensuke, who had been in poverty since his grandfather's time and could not afford proper construction. His storehouse and outbuildings were built on simple earthen-embedded posts, and the roof he had tied together himself with rope, barely keeping out rain, dew, and frost

and snow. Now, in this great storm, storehouses throughout the village were blown down, or had their roofs torn off, and on top of that, a storm surge came pushing in, dragging away the collapsed storehouses—so that many people lost their stored miso, pickled radish, and other light household goods and were left in great distress. Among all of this, Zensuke's storehouse, having been built on posts sunk into the ground, did not lose a single item, and the roof, which had been hand-patched and rope-bound from the start, suffered only minor damage, and he passed through safely. Reflecting on this, one recalls the saying that the thousand lanterns of the wealthy patron of Mount Kōya may at times grow dim, but the single lantern of the poor never goes out and burns bright. Even poverty has its virtue, and being wealthy can on the contrary bring about greater hardship. I have recorded this just as it happened, as a lesson for those who come after.
◯Because Kanagawa-dai sits on high ground, the wind struck it fiercely and many houses were damaged; however, it was spared the threat of storm surge. From there, Namamugi, Shirahata village, Ichiba village, Sunago-chō, Kawabata village, Irie-gawa Hatchō Nawate—in all of these places the storm struck hard, and a single detached building looked…
