**[Right page]** (The rest is omitted below.) This is an incomplete text of only five or six sheets of paper, with the author identified as "Daidō Sanjin" (Wanderer of the Public Road). Though written in a rustic style, it captures the scene of the time well in its wordplay and verse. ◯ A certain friend of mine had been visiting the temporary licensed-quarter residence (*karitaku*) of Hisaki Manjiya in Fukagawa that night. Around dawn, the storm surge pressed forward with great force, and it was no time at all before it overflowed onto the floor. As the water continued to rise, this person attempted to descend the ladder-stairs to make their way home, but finding the situation as it was, had no choice but to return to the second floor. Looking out from the upper story in all directions, the streets had become one vast body of water, like the open sea. Before long, it appeared as though even the second floors of lower-roofed houses were being submerged, to the point that one's eyes grew dizzy. However, in the time it took to smoke four or five pipes of tobacco, the water gradually began to recede, diminishing little by little, so that one's nerves were calmed enough to descend from the second floor—yet water still remained above the floor level, and so one waited in vain until daybreak, the account goes. **[Left page]** ◯ It is now sixty-five years since there was a great tsunami at Susaki during the Kansei era, when everything before the gate of the Benzaiten shrine was swept away. The record of that event has been carved into a stone monument (*ishibumi*) which stands at that location. It was noted in detail how far one had to flee to escape death on that occasion. This time, it was not a tsunami but rather a storm surge (*takashio*), so the death toll did not reach the levels of former times; nonetheless, it is a flood disaster unheard of in recent years. ◯ In Sunamura, the incoming tide was powerful, and many houses were lost—swept away by water and shattered by wind. In the area of Horie and Nekozane as well, the number of collapsed houses was immense. In the Kasai domain, around Komatsugawa and Kamata village, flooding and collapsed houses were likewise numerous. The vicinity of Gyōtoku was entirely devastated, and many dwellings in Funabashi were swept away by the storm surge. It is said that the storm ravaged the coastline all the way across the three provinces of Bōsō. ◯ To the north of the city (*go-fu-nai*), the area around Senju Kamon-juku and Kozukahara suffered minor damage. The area from Minowa, Kanasugi, and Sakamoto-dōri through to Iriya and Negishi was more than half damaged. Within the precincts of Tōeizan (Kan'eiji), the lodging quarters (*shukubō*) and front enclosures (*omote-gakoi*) were entirely severely damaged; great trees were blown down and felled beyond counting, with several hundred large pine and cherry trees within the precincts broken. The lower sub-temples and monastic quarters (*bōsha*)… (continues on the next page)
