◯ 丸山辺りの人物であるが、屋根をめくられ、雨戸を吹き破られ、どうすることもできないので、ずぶ濡れになったまま座っていたところ、南の方から茶碗ほどの大きさの玉が飛んで来て、北をさして飛んでいくことが三度あった。その光は青く赤く、勢いもまたすさまじく、何というものかわからなかった。それ以前に雷が鳴った時も、稲妻の光が盛んに閃き出たが、それとはまったく異なり、下から上へ飛んでいったという。不思議なことである。

◯ A certain person living in the Maruyama area had their roof torn off and their storm shutters blown in, leaving them helpless; they sat thoroughly drenched where they were. From the south, a ball about the size of a teacup came flying and passed northward—this happened three times. Its light was blue and red, and its force was likewise terrifying. No one knew what to call it. Earlier, when thunder had sounded, lightning had flashed frequently, but this was entirely different from lightning—it reportedly flew from below upward. A most mysterious occurrence.
◯ In Yushima, from Kiridōshi-shita Naka-chō onward, there was no particular damage. However, within the precincts of the Tenjin Shrine there, the *bettō-sho* (administrative temple office) and the *kagura-dō* (sacred music hall) were completely destroyed. Furthermore, the bronze *torii* gate—said to weigh over five hundred *kan* and three hundred *me*—toppled together with its stone foundation and broke into three sections, scattering about. Those who saw it the following morning were left aghast. And yet, strangely, the stone *torii* of Otoko-zaka, though slightly tilted from the earthquake, was otherwise unharmed. Within the shrine precincts, the theater (*shibai-koya*), archery range (*yōkyūba*), and teahouses were all destroyed, and whatever remained was damaged. In front of the same [shrine] gate, the three

*-kumi-machi*, Okago-chō, Kasugai-chō, the western rear side, the area in front of Kakugen, Shinmachiya, and the small residences near the fields all suffered damage, and a number of houses also completely collapsed. At the entrance of Tsumagoi-chō, near the gate, the rear tenement longhouse (*nagaya*) of a certain Shimada Yakaku suffered some collapse, the front gate leaned considerably, the Inari shrine suffered minor damage, one townhouse completely collapsed, and more than half of the remainder sustained damage. Throughout this area, being elevated ground facing south, it bore the full force of the wind and rain and suffered more damage than during the earthquake; had the wind blown just a little longer and stronger, not a single building would have been left standing.
◯ Along Shōhei-bashi Street in Soto-Kanda, the samurai residential district (*buke-chi*) below Tsumagoi-zaka sustained no particular damage. In the same area, the back-alley tenements (*ura-dana*) of Dōmei-chō and Odaidokoro-chō had some collapsed houses, and two or three row houses (*nagaya*) along the front also crumbled. Hatago-chō and Kanazawa-chō suffered damage to more than half their buildings. While Soto-Kanda as a whole saw no especially grave losses, the houses that had survived the earthquake mostly had areas of collapse, with further damage as well. Houses facing southeast, in particular, reportedly suffered the worst of the wind. That night at Shōhei-bashi, firewood, timber, bamboo, and planks came floating down from upstream, and the flow did not cease even after dawn.
