現代語訳
（前頁より続く）というのは、『方丈記』も知らずに言っている俗人であろう。あるいは「命こそ危ういが、晴れ間を待って出かけよう」と言う、登蓮ならぬ法師もいることだろう。また、他人の妻を我が物顔に連れ去ろうとする、秋湖とは異なるそそっかしい男もいることだろう。盲人が（惨状を）見つけ、耳の聞こえない者が（噂を）聞きつけて、上へ下への大騒ぎとなったことなど、並べて言えば、水に浮かぶ雑木、陸地に散らばった屋根板の数え切れぬほどの（話がある）。僧俗男女の愛別離苦は、おおむねこのようなものであったと、その概略を巻の始めに記しておく。
安政三年（1856年）丙辰の十月六日、雨がひどく降る夕方より筆を濡らし始め、地震が強く揺れる翌朝、わなわなと震えながら稿を脱す。

There may also be monks—though not quite a Tōren—who say, "My life may be in danger, but I shall wait for a break in the weather before venturing out." And there may be reckless men, unlike Shūko, who carry off another man's wife as if she were their own. The blind stumbling upon (the devastation), the deaf somehow hearing of it, and the ensuing great commotion—to list it all out, from the driftwood floating on the water to the roof planks scattered across the land, there is no end to the counting. The sorrows of parting—among monks and laypeople, men and women alike—were, in broad strokes, as described here, and I set down this outline at the beginning of the volume.
On the evening of the sixth day of the tenth month of Ansei 3 (1856), the year of Heishin (丙辰), as rain fell heavily, I began to wet my brush; and on the morning when the earth shook with great tremors, I completed this draft, my hands trembling all the while.
