現代語訳
九歳ほどと思われる一人の美しい若者が、私のそばに来て「助けてあげましょう、こちらへいらっしゃい」と袖を引いたので、私もたいそう嬉しくなって、引かれるままについて行くと、その美少年は先に立ってこの家の縁の下に入ったので、続いて入ってみると、床下の中はとても明るく、おまけに風雨の音さえ聞こえなかったので、心が落ち着いてそこに居りました。こうしているうちに、その美少年は「お腹が空いたでしょう」と言って、いろいろな食べ物を取り出して与え、「今夜はここに泊まりなさい」と一つの寝床に入って共に寝てからは、うつつになってよく覚えていません。そうして、しばらくして目が覚めると、その美少年はいなくなっており、どこかで私を呼び立てる声がしたので、気がつくと外に出ていて、庭先の縁端にいました。それで「伯母上に挨拶をしに参りました」と何気なく答えたのです。
これを聞いた親子三人はますます驚きあきれ、「これは狐狸妖怪にたぶらかされて、慰み者にされたに違いない。それにしても我が家の床下にいたと聞けば気持ちが悪い。早く床をはがして改めて見よう」と、三人ほどの下男を雇って畳を上げ、板敷きを外してよくよく見てみると、濡れた菰筵が二、三枚、藁苞が二、三個あって、そのあたりは土を掘り崩して窪んだ場所が一坪ほどあったが、他には怪しいものも何もなかった。そこで菰筵を引き出し、窪んだ場所を埋めて元通りにした上で、修験者を招いて除魔祈祷を行った。しかし、その娘は床についてから起き上がることもできず、折々あの若者を呼ぶとて這い出そうとすることがあり、普段はぼんやりとして気が抜けたようであったので、金子氏はもてあまし、世間体を憚って、もともと預かっていた縁者のもとへ再び送り返したということである。
思うに、中国人の随筆に、揚州の孫子長というものが、年十五、六歳にして、顔かたちはなはだ美麗なり。ある年の秋、七夕の夜、楼上にて空を眺め、牽牛・織女の契りの絶えないことを羨ましく感じ、文を作って星へ捧げた時、たちまち心が茫然として…

A beautiful young man who appeared to be about eighteen or nineteen years old came to my side and said, "I will help you — please come this way," pulling at my sleeve. I was exceedingly glad and followed where he led. The beautiful young man went ahead and entered beneath the veranda of this house, so I followed him in. Inside under the floorboards it was surprisingly bright, and moreover there was no sound of wind or rain, so my heart grew calm and I remained there. While we were thus, the beautiful young man said "You must be hungry," and produced various foods for me. Then he said "Please stay here for the night," and we lay down together in one bed — after that I became hazy and do not remember clearly. After some time had passed, I awoke to find the beautiful young man gone, and hearing a voice calling to me from somewhere, I found myself outside at the edge of the veranda by the garden. So I called out to my aunt as a greeting — that is what happened," she answered, as if nothing were out of the ordinary.
At this, the three family members were more astonished and bewildered than ever, saying: "She must have been bewitched and made a plaything of by a fox-spirit or some other supernatural creature. Even so, knowing that she was under our very own floorboards is most unsettling. Let us quickly pull up the floor and examine it." They hired about three manservants, raised the tatami mats and removed the floorboards, and examined everything carefully. They found two or three damp rush mats, two or three bundles of straw, and an area of about one tsubo where the earth had been dug out and hollowed — but there was nothing else suspicious. So they pulled out the rush mats, filled in the hollow and restored it to its former state, and then summoned a shugenja (mountain ascetic) to perform a demon-expelling prayer ritual. However, the girl, from the time she took to her bed, could not rise, and occasionally attempted to crawl out, saying she was going to call the young man. In ordinary times she was in a daze, as if her spirit had left her, and so Mr. Kaneko, at a loss what to do and mindful of public reputation, sent her back once more to the relatives from whom she had originally been entrusted.
