桜井 家（け）にてしかも水（すい）門汐入の舟便利よき処（ところ）故去ㇽ風雨の夜に
至りてハ帰（かへつ）て迷惑（めいわく）に及びしより扨も彼の夜風雨 烈（はげ）しく家根ハ
漏（も）り出し雨戸ハ危（あや）ふく吹はづさんとするが故に内 弟子（でし）共を相手
にて畳（たゝミ）を揚つ戸を押への騒動（さうどう）なして居る処へ近隣（きんりん）長屋の婦
人どもあな恐ろしの水出なりと罵（のゝし）りつゝ先生の宅へ逃込（にげこ）ミ来る故
戸へ出て是を見るに早水の深き事 膝頭（ひざがしら）を越すまでなり其時先生
心を静（しづ）め斯（かく）大勢に成たれバ我が騒ぎてハ悪しかりと袴（はかま）を着（ちやく）し座
に直り泰然（たいぜん）として止（や）むを待（まつ）に国より来たれる内弟子一人 周章（あハて）て外へ
馳（はせ）出し家根より落（おつ）る欠瓦（かけがハら）に頭上（づしよう）打れて怪（け）我を成すなど実に当
惑（わく）の其 処（ところ）へ同藩（とうばん）の兄（あに）馳 来（きた）り今我が長屋の吹倒れしが自分 妻子（さいし）
に怪我なけれど隣（りん）家の何 某覆（がしおほ）はれバ手伝ひて堀出し呉（くれ）
よと有故如何（あるゆへいか）にも心得（こゝろえ）たりと家内其外隣家（かないそのほかりんか）の人に騒（さハ）ぎ給ふな最（も）
ふ余程（よほど）雨風ともにおだやミぬと取静（とりしづ）めて弟子共 打連（うちつれ）彼の潰（つぶ）れ家を
掘穿（ほりうが）ちて漸々助（やう〳〵たす）け出（いた）せしが少々 腰（こし）を打たるのミにて多分（たぶん）の怪我（けが）も
なさゞるを共に歓（よろこ）びたるよしなり当家（とうけ）ハ庭（にハ）に築（つき）山有故 其処（そこ）まで
逃（にげ）んと水（ミづ）の中を馳出（はせいで）て或（ある）ハ転（まろ）び又ハ浮木（うきゝ）に突当（つきあた）り足（あし）を痛（いた）めしも
少なからず 然るに先生が宅（たく）へ逃込（にげこミ）し人〻ハ安泰（あんたい）にて衣類（いるい）も濡（ぬら）さず大
きに是を歓びぬるが跡（あと）にて其夜逃来（そのよにげきた）りし人々に問（とふ）ていふ何故（なにゆへ）彼の夜（よ）
我家（わがや）をさして各々方（おの〳〵）ハ来たりしといへバ若（わか）き人々の大勢（おほぜい）なれバ兎（と）に
角 助（たす）け呉（くれ）なんと夫（それ）を頼（たの）ミに逃込（にげこミ）しよし先生聞て大笑（たいしやう）なし我（われ）とて
別（べつ）に詮術（せんすべ）なし水増（ミづまさ）り家倒（いへたふ）れバ供（とも）に死（し）すべき所（ところ）なりしを無事（ぶじ）なり

桜井家にて、しかも水門・潮入りの船便利の良い処であったため、去る風雨の夜に至っては、かえって迷惑に及んだ。さても、あの夜は風雨が激しく、屋根は漏り出し、雨戸は危うく吹き外されそうになるので、内弟子たちを相手にして、畳を上げたり戸を押さえたりする騒動をしているところへ、近隣長屋の婦人たちが「ああ恐ろしい水害だ」と騒ぎながら先生の宅へ逃げ込んできた。そこで戸外へ出てこれを見ると、早くも水の深さは膝頭を越すまでになっていた。その時先生は心を静め、「これほど大勢になったのだから、自分が騒いでは悪い」と袴を着けて座に直り、泰然として（水が）止むのを待った。国より来ていた内弟子一人が慌てて外へ駆け出し、屋根より落ちる欠け瓦に頭上を打たれて怪我をするなど、実に当惑していたところへ、同藩の兄が駆けつけてきて「今、我が長屋が吹き倒されたが、自分の妻子に怪我はないけれど、隣家の何某が覆われているので、手伝って掘り出してくれ」と言うので、「いかにも心得た」と、家内その他隣家の人に「騒ぎなさるな。もう余程雨風ともに穏やかになった」と言って取り静め、弟子たちを連れて、あの潰れ家を掘り穿って、ようやく助け出したが、少々腰を打っただけで、大きな怪我もなかったのを共に喜んだということである。当家は庭に築山があるので、そこまで逃げようと水の中を駆け出して、あるいは転び、また浮木に突き当たり足を痛めた者も少なくなかった。しかるに先生の宅へ逃げ込んだ人々は安泰にて、衣類も濡らさず、大いにこれを喜んだが、後になって、その夜逃げてきた人々に問うて言う。「何故あの夜、我が家をさして各々方は来たのか」と言えば、「若い人々が大勢いるので、とにかく助けてくれるだろうと、それを頼みに逃げ込んだ」とのこと。先生はこれを聞いて大笑いし、「自分とて別に良い手段があるわけではない。水が増し家が倒れれば、共に死ぬべきところであったのに、無事だったことこそ幸い」と言って喜悦を共にしたと、笑いながら話されたが、これらは

The master and his live-in disciples were busy lifting tatami mats and holding down doors when women from the neighboring tenements came rushing in, crying "Oh, what a terrible flood!" and seeking refuge at the master's house. When he went outside to see the situation, the water was already knee-deep. At that moment, the master calmed himself and thought, "With so many people gathered here, it would be wrong for me to panic." He put on his hakama, sat properly, and waited calmly for the water to recede. One of the live-in disciples from his home province panicked and rushed outside, where he was injured when broken roof tiles fell and struck his head. In the midst of this confusion, a fellow clansman came running and said, "My tenement has just been blown down. My wife and children are uninjured, but a neighbor has been trapped under the debris. Please help dig him out." The master replied, "Of course, I understand," and told the household and neighboring people, "Do not panic. The wind and rain have calmed considerably now." He then led his disciples to dig through the collapsed house and managed to rescue the trapped person, who had only minor injuries to his back and no serious harm, which they all celebrated together. At the master's house, there was an artificial hill in the garden, so some people tried to reach it by running through the floodwater, with many falling down or bumping into floating debris and injuring their feet. However, those who had taken refuge in the master's house remained safe and didn't even get their clothes wet, which they greatly appreciated. Later, when asked why they had come specifically to his house that night, they replied, "There were many young men there, so we thought you would surely help us, and that's why we sought refuge there."
