現代語訳
乾燥した土地では、気は少なく薄くて低い。厚く高い場合は、映し出された像はますます大きく見え、像はますます高く見える。薄く低い場合は、映し出された像はそれほど大きくなく、像もそれほど高く見えない。大まかに言えば、地形が均一でなければ、気の状態も均一ではない。したがって、蒙気（大気差）の影響を受けるものも、その程度が均一ではない。日躔・月離・五星・列宿などの経緯度分を正確に定めようとするならば、まずその土地の蒙気差を定めなければ、最終的に精密に一致させることは難しい。
私の師である司馬熊公（諱は明遇）はこう言われた。「天地の象で、定まるべきなのに定まらないのは、気が之を蒙うためである。天地の数で、定まるべきなのに定まらないのは、事が之を乱すためである。物事に通じた者は、始めから終わりまで、古今にわたって、深く時の変化を観察し、仰いで蒙気を察し、俯いて乱れた事象を識り、その理を権衡（はかり）にかける。そうすれば、天官（天文の知識）は備わるのである。」
【星座】

答え：諸星には、一星で一座をなすものがあり、二・三星から十星余りで一座をなすものがある。また、互いに比（となり）して附属するものがあり、比（となり）しながらも附属しないものがある。杠（こう）は華蓋に附属し、合計十八星で一座をなす。衡は庫楼に附属し、合計二十九星で一座をなす。鉞（まさかり）は井宿に附属せず、耳は畢宿に附属せず、糠（ぬか）は箕宿に附属せず、長沙は軫宿に附属せず、鈎鈴・閉鍵は房宿に附属しない。これらは属吏（部下の官吏）でありながら、独自に官をなすようなものである。矢は弧に附属できるが、臼は杵に附属できない。それは、弧と矢は一人が司るが、杵と臼は二人が司るためである。野鶏は軍井に附属せず、鶏は自らその司る所を守るのである。南門は庫楼に附属しない。南門は単に庫楼の門というわけではないからである。積水が天船に附属せず、積屍が大陵に附属せず、天讒が巻舌に附属せず、咸池・天潢が五車に附属しないのも同様である。これらにはそれぞれの弁別する理由があり、臆説（根拠のない説）で論じるべきではない。

In dry lands, the qi (atmospheric vapor) is sparse, thin, and low. Where it is thick and high, the reflected images appear increasingly large and elevated. Where it is thin and low, the reflected images are not particularly large, nor are they elevated to any great degree. Generally speaking, if the terrain is uneven, the state of the qi will also be uneven. Consequently, the degree to which things are affected by the meng qi (atmospheric refraction) is also uneven. If one wishes to precisely determine the degrees of solar longitude, lunar position, the five planets, and the various constellations, it is ultimately difficult to achieve accurate agreement without first determining the local atmospheric refraction differential.
My teacher, Master Sima Xiong (personal name: Mingyu), said: "In the phenomena of heaven and earth, that which ought to be fixed yet is not fixed—it is because qi veils it. In the numerical patterns of heaven and earth, that which ought to be fixed yet is not fixed—it is because events disrupt it. One who truly comprehends things will, from beginning to end, across all ages, deeply observe the changes of the times, look up to examine the atmospheric vapor, look down to understand disruptive events, and weigh their principles in the balance. Then the knowledge of celestial offices will be complete."

Answer: Among the stars, there are those that form one constellation by themselves, and those that form one constellation with two, three, or more than ten stars. Some are adjacent and affiliated with one another, while others are adjacent but not affiliated. Gang (the Pole) is affiliated with Huagai (the Canopy), forming a single constellation of eighteen stars in total. Heng (the Weighing Beam) is affiliated with Kulou (the Arsenal Pavilion), forming a single constellation of twenty-nine stars in total. Yue (the Axe) is not affiliated with Jing (the Well); Er (the Ear) is not affiliated with Bi (the Net); Kang (the Chaff) is not affiliated with Ji (the Winnowing Basket); Changsha is not affiliated with Zhen (the Chariot); and Gouling and Bijian are not affiliated with Fang (the Room). These are like subordinate officials who nonetheless hold their own independent posts. The Arrow can be affiliated with the Bow, but the Mortar cannot be affiliated with the Pestle—because the Bow and Arrow are governed by one person, while the Pestle and Mortar are governed by two. The Wild Pheasant is not affiliated with the Army Well, as the Pheasant independently guards its own domain. The Southern Gate is not affiliated with the Arsenal Pavilion, because the Southern Gate is not merely the gate of the Arsenal Pavilion. Similarly, Jishui (Accumulated Water) is not affiliated with Tianchu (the Celestial Boat), Jishi (Accumulated Corpses) is not affiliated with Daling (the Great Mound), Tianchan is not affiliated with Juanshe (the Rolled Tongue), and Xianchi and Tianhuang are not affiliated with Wuche (the Five Chariots).
