虎（とら）を画（ゑがい）て猫（ねこ）に類（るい）す。画工（ぐわこひう）の不調宝（ふてうほう）。月（つき）を書（かい）て日（ひ）に読（よむ）。
唐様（からやう）の不通用（ふつうよう）形（かたち）等（ひとし）といへども。其品（そのしな）大（おほい）に異（こと）なり
茲（こゝ）に執筆（しゆひつ）傀儡子（くわいらいし）。図（づ）する所（ところ）の武者絵（むしやゑ）。其形（そのかたち）似（に）たるを
撰（ゑら）み。目（もく）して武者合天狗俳諧（むしやあはせてんぐはいかい）といふ。他（かれ）元（もと）より高慢（こうまん）の

【本文】
虎を描いて猫に似てしまう。これは画工の技術が未熟なためである。月と書いて日と読む。
唐様の字体が普通に使われていないためである。形は同じであっても、その品格は大いに異なる。
ここに執筆者である傀儡子が描くところの武者絵は、その形が似ているものを
選び、「武者合天狗俳諧」と名づけている。彼は元々高慢で
鼻が非常に高い。そのため新旧の発句を加えて、私にその評価を
求めている。これもまた虎を描いて猫に似てしまい、角を切って牛を殺
すような類いであろうと、その趣旨を序文とする。

Drawing a tiger that resembles a cat - this is due to the painter's lack of skill. Writing "moon" but reading it as "sun" - this happens because Chinese calligraphy styles are not commonly used. Though the forms may appear the same, their essential qualities differ greatly.
Here, the author Kugutsu-shi has drawn warrior pictures, selecting those whose forms are similar, and calls this work "Warrior Competition Tengu Haikai." He is naturally arrogant and his nose is extremely high. Therefore, he has added both old and new haiku verses and requests that I evaluate them. This too is like drawing a tiger that resembles a cat, or cutting off horns and killing an ox - such is the nature of this work, which I present as this preface.
