[Continued from the previous page] (The two documents) are brought in (by the jinin). Both documents are returned after affixing a mark (ten). The hagiNaga (long-legged official) dispatches to Matsushita and Funaki, and as usual to Torii-ōji. Both men return the documents after affixing their marks. The hitokusa-mono (single-category offering list) is sent to the regular and provisional negi (junior priests) and the hōri-dai (acting ritualist). After each affixes their mark, it is reported back to the shoshi-dai (deputy shrine administrator). One note: Today (the last day of the fourth month), the departure outfits (dedachi) for both the left and right jōri (jockeys) for the 5th-day race are brought by the shoshi-dai to the head priest for inspection. At this time, celebratory sake is served. First day of the fifth month: Two horses from Shizuri and Kanatsu are tethered to the Shimonoke (lower field) horses. There is a morning meal for eight people in total: the kannushi-dai (acting head priest), shoshi-dai (deputy shrine administrator), bettō (administrator), mokudai (land steward's representative), azukari (custodian), tayū (senior official), utagaku (song/music official), and both jōri (jockeys). Around noon, the kannushi-dai, shoshi, mokudai, and two jōri receive yu-zuke (rice soaked in hot water / a simple meal). After leading around all the horses from the various locations, the Shizuri and Kanatsu horses are brought out. The kannushi-dai comes on duty, accompanied by the aforementioned four persons. Eighteen or nineteen jinin (shrine attendants) are divided left and right to serve as guards. The retinue consists of: a Chinese-style umbrella bearer 《marginal note: in white livery (hakuchō)》, a footwear bearer 《marginal note: same》, a blue-robed attendant (aosamurai) 《marginal note: one person》, and naginata-bearing manservants (chūgen) 《marginal note: three persons》, of whom two serve the role of receiving and handing over the horses. The procedures are completed as per custom, the party forms up in an orderly line, and a congratulatory ceremony is held at the Chōya (administrative hall), with sake offered as ritual accompaniment. They then withdraw. The jinin take their leave at Kirishiba (the cut-grass area) and depart. Third day: It is noted that the silk for stipends (roku) given at the foot of the stairs is provided by the divine service officials (jineki), and preparations are accordingly made. On the 5th day, farmers (hyakushō) are to come from both sides of the foot of the stairs to receive their labor provisions (bu). Today, the "elder father" (okina-chichi) of the bathhouse brings two bunches of iris (shōbu) and large mackerel (ōsaba). One shō of rice is given to him. Today, as per ceremony, they are seen off, but he declines and sends them back. One shoshi comes (in their stead). One note: At the Umatokorо (horse ground / stable), there is a meal for all of: the head priest (kannushi), shoshi, bettō, azukari (custodian), mokudai, utagaku (song official), and Taguchi. At noon, a celebratory ceremony is held at the horse ground for the shoshi, mokudai, bettō, and kannushi.
