[Continued from the previous page] — one person, and jinin (shrine attendants) and others. The procession is arranged as follows: first, approximately fifty jinin march in two columns. Of these, two wear armor (kaichū) beneath their yellow robes (kōe) and walk close to the head priest, standing to the left and right of him. Then come thirty-odd upper and lower staff bearing staffs (tsue), 《Marginal note: Twenty-one persons; three are absent, hence the explanation.》 followed by the Taguchi guard contingent of eighteen men brought along to cover the rear. One note: Today, all five officials (gokan) do not take their seats (chakuza). The provisions (goryō) are sent by each individual from their lodging to be collected by the bettō (administrator). For the head priest alone, as per custom, the jinin brings (the provisions). One note: Regarding the time of taking up duty: when the left jōri (jockey) comes out to the front of the bathhouse (yuya), the head priest departs from his lodging. At this time, there is no occasion for anyone to cross paths. The matter of taking seats is as per custom and need not be recorded here. After the ten rounds of the horse races are completed, a congratulatory ceremony (shūgi) is held for the head priest, both jōri from the left and right at the foot of the stairs, those present wearing purified robes (jōe), the bettō, shoshi, tayū, and mokudai. When proceedings are completed, they withdraw. The jinin take their leave at Kirishiba (the cut-grass area). 《Marginal note: One copy each.》 Ninth day of the fifth month: A certain person relates the following. In ordinary years, on the morning of the 5th day, the head priest sends sutra-recitation services (zukyō) to the jōri group. This time, being unaware of this practice, the services were not sent. It is said they are sent every year. Accordingly, on the 7th day, the jōri sent word expressing that "the sacred rites were concluded without incident, and this is greatly to be treasured." This was in fact their expression of thanks for the sutra recitation, and it is noted that one person from the first ride (hatsu-nori) came to pay respects. It is said that the sutra recitation is also sent to the daikan-shū (agents / deputies). Fifth month — concerning the retreat (sanrō) at Kibune Shrine: Preparations had been made for a retreat beginning on the 10th of the current month, but this was delayed due to an abdominal ailment. The 13th is the day of the Hare (u), and it is the gotokubi (auspicious day) of the Sentō (Retired Emperor's palace). The 14th is the day of the Dragon (tatsu), and it is the gotokubi of the Shin'in-sama (the new Retired Emperor). On the 12th, a visit was made to the tensō (court liaison) to report the matter, but as they were absent, on the 15th another visit was made to inquire. It was conveyed that, as there were prayers (gokitō) to be performed, one should present an o-nadomono (a ritual object that is stroked / used in purification rites) as per established custom and carry out the prayers. In accordance with this instruction, a visit was made to the imperial palace (kinchū). The tensō's representative at the palace did not accompany. Reporting to the Nagahashi御局 (the Nagahashi Lady-in-waiting), she communicated that "his/her Majesty will likely not be going out today," and after deliberation, issued a pledge (chikai / written assurance) on the matter. After reporting from Shin'in-sama's side, a further visit was made to the Sentō-sama. Fujiki Tajima conveyed the following: "Today there is a lunar eclipse, and therefore it is not possible to report the matter. Please come again tomorrow." Furthermore, it was stated that "at times of solar or lunar eclipses, such matters should be considered unnecessary (i.e., suspended)."
