On the 16th day, early in the morning, a messenger was sent to Tono (Fujiki) Tajima to request the o-nadomono (ritual purification object) of the Sentō-sama (Retired Emperor), which was duly received and brought back. **Preparations for the retreat (sanrō):** - Salt: 《a small amount》 - Pickled vegetables (kōnomono): 《a small amount》 - Dried deer meat (hoshika): 10 pieces - Three sun, three shō (a measure of rice or provisions) 《Marginal note: Nagabu (long-serving laborers)》 - Earthenware vessels (kawarake): 《three doses' worth》 - Oil: 4 gō - Laborers (ninzoku): 2 persons 《West / East》 - Load-bearers (nimochi): 2 persons 《West / East》 - Wooden clogs (bokuri) - Thick sandal cords (obuto) On the 16th day, around midday, (the party) departed from Kamo and proceeded to Kibune for the retreat, lodging directly in the inner sanctuary (oku). Every day, the o-nadomono of the three imperial residences (mi-gosho) were placed as offerings before the deity in the innermost part of the shrine, and twelve sessions of the Nakatomi Harae (Nakatomi purification rites) were performed. Shrine visits (shazan) were conducted twice daily, morning and evening. On the 18th, the Sōdono (general hall / chief official's residence) hosted a banquet. On the 19th, Enshiki hosted a banquet. Also on the 19th at midday, a delivery arrived from the valley 《marginal note: thirty bundles/portions》. A celebratory ceremony was held for the four persons: the daikan-shū (deputies), the shinnushidai (acting head priest), Yasumoto, and the acting shōhōri 《marginal note: Gon-hōri, Shigeshige》. A small number of chimaki (rice dumplings wrapped in leaves) were placed on a sanpō (a three-footed ritual stand). For the daikan-shū, flat folding trays (hiraoshiki) were used. Sake was served, and each person received a cup (sakazuki). The accompanying dishes were wakame (young seaweed) and dried fish. 《Marginal note: Two persons wore hunting robes (kariginu); the daikan-shū wore purified robes (jōe).》 On the 20th, the acting head priest hosted a banquet. 《Marginal note: The oku-kanbō (inner administrator) and sōdono were in attendance.》 On the 21st, the Head Negi (shō-negi) hosted a banquet, the same as the previous day. On the 22nd, in the evening, (the party) departed for home (gekō). Thirteen copies of kanju (scrolls recording completed sutra recitations) were presented to each of the various imperial residences (gosho) by the shoshi and tayū in their official capacities. The o-nadomono were also submitted on this occasion. Sixth month 《marginal note: a long month (of 30 days)》, evening of the 29th: As per custom, a nō/sarugaku performance was held at the御戸代 (o-todai, the sacred curtain/gate area) before the deity. Today, Yata no Tayū came to visit the head priest's residence, accompanied by two others, and brought along the bettō (temple administrator). Sake and food were served as part of the celebratory ceremony. First, dried cooked rice (hoshiimeshi) was served, followed by sake and accompanying dishes 《marginal note: abalone / dried melon》, and other items. A ko-utai (short song/chant) was performed. In conclusion, the head priest and the tayū performed a utai (chant) together before the head priest. Today, a messenger from Ōhara brought a柱矩 (hashiraku) / 松 (matsu) — a ritual implement from the In-den (seal hall) — to the head priest. Today, one kanju (sutra-recitation scroll) was received from the kyōsho (sutra hall). On the 18th of the previous (month), a Renge-e (Lotus Flower Assembly) was held. On that day, one suehiro (a fan used in ritual contexts) from the kyōsho was brought to each of the three places above the rank of daikan-shū, but it was delivered to the daikan-shū and did not reach the head priest.
