規式も知らずと世俗は卑しみ笑うけれども、詳しく窺うに、暑寒を以て年を算え、月の晦朔を量り及び気候を窺って四時八節を知り、家々に月祭りがある。（月祭りには名越の祓いに用いるが如く茅の輪を作り、カムイシカナツケと号し、幣を添えて海辺に建てて祓い言がある。祓いを祷りのイタクと云う。）年の大祭は大概冬至の時

Though common people despise and laugh at them saying they know no proper customs, when examined closely, they calculate years by heat and cold, measure the last and first days of months, observe seasonal conditions to know the four seasons and eight seasonal divisions, and each household has monthly festivals. (For monthly festivals, they make rings of miscanthus grass like those used in Nagoshi purification rituals, call them "Kamui-shika-natsuke," add offerings and erect them by the seashore for purification. They call purification prayers "itaku.") The great festival of the year generally takes place around the winter solstice.
