消毒薬の中で最も有力なものは石炭酸を第一とする。近年消毒法の名声を得たのは、主としてこの発明によるものである。これに次ぐものは亜硫酸ガスである。緑礬の単用は防臭の能力があるのみで、病毒を撲滅するには足りない。また石炭酸を配合して使用すべきである。
消毒薬の処方
第一 粗製石炭酸 45分から60分のフェニル酸（すなわち結晶石炭酸）を含むもので、やや色を帯び流動し、水に溶けにくい。「タール」を化すれば不快な臭気を発する。
第二 石炭酸末 右の粗製石炭酸に木炭・砂灰・鋸屑等の粗末を混ぜたもの。
第三 結晶石炭酸（すなわち「フェニル酸またはフェニルアルコール」） 無色の結晶酸で全く水に溶解するもの（18分から20分の水で既に溶解する）。
第四 石炭酸水 結晶石炭酸1分を100倍の水に溶かしたもの。
第五 石炭酸溶液 結晶石炭酸2分を100分の水に混ぜたもの。
第六 硫酸鉄と石炭酸との混合溶液 1キログラムの緑礬を

Among disinfectants, carbolic acid is considered the most effective. The recent reputation gained by disinfection methods is primarily due to this invention. Next to this is sulfurous acid gas. The use of green vitriol alone only has deodorizing capability and is insufficient for eradicating disease toxins. Carbolic acid should also be mixed with it.
Disinfectant Formulations
First: Crude carbolic acid - Contains 45 to 60 percent phenolic acid (i.e., crystalline carbolic acid), is somewhat colored and fluid, and dissolves with difficulty in water. When "tar" is formed, it emits an unpleasant odor.
Second: Carbolic acid powder - The above crude carbolic acid mixed with coarse materials such as charcoal, sand ash, sawdust, etc.
Third: Crystalline carbolic acid (i.e., "phenolic acid or phenyl alcohol") - A colorless crystalline acid that dissolves completely in water (already dissolves in 18 to 20 parts water).
Fourth: Carbolic acid water - One part crystalline carbolic acid dissolved in 100 times the amount of water.
Fifth: Carbolic acid solution - Two parts crystalline carbolic acid mixed with 100 parts water.
