今年安政二年十月二日、人定の刻（午後10時頃）に至り、稀有の大地震があった。倉庫や家屋はことごとく損なわれ、人や家畜の負傷者も多数に上ったため、身分の貴賎を問わず皆が魂を失い、恐怖しない者はいなかった。しかるに名だたる神社仏閣においては十のうち九つが無事であったのは不思議でもあり、実に尊いことである。仰がずにいられようか、敬わずにいられようか。
『埃嚢鈔』十四巻に地震動の吉凶を知る方法が載せられている。これによると、十月二日は二十八宿の虚宿に当たり、時刻は亥の刻である。仏説によれば、この日この時の地震を「帝釈動」と称して、その兆しは「天下安穏、五穀豊饒、天子吉、大臣福を受け、万民安穏なり」と記されている。火神動、龍神動、金翅鳥動と、震動には四種類あることが『大智度論』に出ており、帝釈動以外は皆凶兆である。大鯰の仕業というのも金翅鳥動の類であろう。
とにもかくにも、実にめでたい世直しである。この小冊子は、上代からの地震を古今の書籍から抜粋・選択して、今度のものよりもはるかに勝る地震が数十度もあったが、世が衰退することもなく、いよいよ栄えて天地と共に窮まりない我が葦原の中つ国の太平が万々歳であることを人々に知らせ申し上げようとして編纂したものである。

Chronicle of Earthquakes

This year, on the 2nd day of the 10th month of Ansei 2nd year, at the hour of nintei (around 10 PM), there was an unprecedented great earthquake. Warehouses and houses were completely damaged, and there were many injuries among people and livestock, so that regardless of social status, high or low, everyone lost their composure and there was no one who was not terrified. However, it is mysterious and truly sacred that nine out of ten famous shrines and temples remained unharmed. How can we not revere this? How can we not respect it?
In the "Ainōshō" (14 volumes), methods for determining the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of earthquakes are recorded. According to this, the 2nd day of the 10th month corresponds to the Kyoshuku constellation of the 28 lunar mansions, and the time was the hour of the Boar. According to Buddhist teachings, an earthquake on this day at this time is called "Taishaku-yuri" (Indra's movement), and its sign indicates "peace under heaven, abundant five grains, good fortune for the emperor, ministers receiving blessings, and peace for all people." There are four types of earthquakes: Kajin-yuri (fire god movement), Ryūjin-yuri (dragon god movement), and Konshichō-yuri (Garuda movement), as described in the "Daichido-ron" (Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom). All except Taishaku-yuri are evil omens. The actions of the great catfish would also be a type of Konshichō-yuri.
In any case, this is truly an auspicious world reform. This small booklet excerpts and selects earthquakes from ancient times from various historical texts, showing that there have been dozens of earthquakes far greater than the current one, yet the world has not declined but has prospered even more, demonstrating that the peace of our Ashihara-no-nakatsu-kuni (Japan) is eternal like heaven and earth. This was compiled to inform people of this fact.
