はるか昔、神代の時代に、速須佐之男命（はやすさのをのみこと）が根の国へお立ちになろうとして、天照大御神のもとへご挨拶のために高天原へお上りになった際、山川ことごとく動き、国土がすべて震えた。
【古事記上巻】これが地震のはじまりと言うべきであろう。
【允恭天皇】五年七月十四日、地震あり。
【推古天皇】七年四月二十七日、大地が動き、建物がことごとく壊れた。すなわち四方に命令を下して、地震の神を祀らせられた。
【皇極天皇】元年十月八日、地震して雨が降る。翌日また地震し、この夜、地震して風が吹く。二十四日夜中、地震あり。
【天武天皇】四年十一月、大いに地動く。◯同六年六月十四日、大いに地震あり。◯同七年十二月、筑紫国（現・九州）が大いに震え、地面の裂け目は広さ二丈、長さ三千余丈に及び、村々の民家が多く倒れ崩れた。この時、ある百姓の家が岡の上にあったが、揺り動かされて別の場所へ移ってしまったにもかかわらず、その家は無傷で崩れず、家の中の者も家の場所が変わったことに気づかず、翌朝になって初めて大いに驚いた。

◯同十三年十月十四日、亥の刻（午後十時頃）に大地震あり。山崩れ、川の水が湧き出で、諸国の役所・民家・寺社の破壊は数え上げられないほどで、人や家畜の死傷者が多かった。伊予（現・愛媛県）の温泉が埋まり、土佐国（現・高知県）の田畑五十余万頃（百畝を一頃といい、つまり五十余万町に相当）が海となった。◯同十四年十二月十日、地震、西より発す。以上【日本書紀】
【文武天皇】【大宝】元年三月二十四日、丹波国（現・京都府北部等）にて地震、三日間続く。
【元明天皇】【霊亀】元年五月二十五日、遠江国（現・静岡県西部）で地震があり山崩れが起き、麁玉河（あらたまかわ）がふさがり、数十日を経て水があふれ出し、敷智・長下・石田の三郡百七十余の村が水没し、苗が損なわれた。翌二十六日、三河国（現・愛知県東部）で地震があり、政府の倉庫四十七棟・民家が壊れ崩れ落ちた。
【聖武天皇】【天平】六年四月七日、大地震あり。諸国の民家が壊れ、圧死者が多く、山崩れ・川のせき止め・地面の亀裂は数え上げられないほどであった。同九月二十四日、大いに地震あり。◯同十六年五月（以下次ページへ続く）

**Chronicle of Earthquakes**
Long ago, in the Age of the Gods, when Hayasusanoo-no-Mikoto was about to depart for the Nether Land (Ne-no-kuni) and ascended to Takamagahara (the Plain of High Heaven) to bid farewell to Amaterasu-Ōmikami, all the mountains and rivers shook and the entire land trembled.
[Kojiki, Volume One] This should be considered the very beginning of earthquakes.
[Emperor Ingyō] 5th year, 7th month, 14th day: Earthquake.
[Empress Suiko] 7th year, 4th month, 27th day: The earth moved and all buildings were destroyed. Orders were thereupon issued throughout the land to enshrine the god of earthquakes.
[Empress Kōgyoku] 1st year, 10th month, 8th day: Earthquake and rain. The following day, another earthquake; that night, earthquake with wind. On the 24th day, in the middle of the night, an earthquake occurred.
[Emperor Tenmu] 4th year, 11th month: Great earthquake. ◯ Same reign, 6th year, 6th month, 14th day: Great earthquake. ◯ Same reign, 7th year, 12th month: Tsukushi Province (modern Kyushu) was struck by a great earthquake; fissures in the earth were two jō wide and over three thousand jō long, and many houses in the villages collapsed. At this time, a farmer's house that stood on a hill was shaken and transported to another location, yet the house itself remained completely intact and unbroken; the inhabitants did not realize their house had moved until the following morning, when they were greatly astonished.

◯ Same reign, 13th year, 10th month, 14th day, Hour of the Boar (approx. 10 p.m.): A great earthquake. Mountains collapsed, river waters surged up, and the destruction of government offices, private homes, and temples and shrines throughout the provinces was beyond counting. Many people and livestock were killed or injured. The hot springs of Iyo Province (modern Ehime Prefecture) were buried, and over 500,000 kō of fields in Tosa Province (modern Kōchi Prefecture) — one kō being 100 se, equivalent to over 500,000 chō — became submerged under the sea. ◯ Same reign, 14th year, 12th month, 10th day: Earthquake originating from the west. [Emperor Monmu] [Taihō] 1st year, 3rd month, 24th day: Earthquake in Tanba Province (modern northern Kyoto Prefecture area) lasting three days.
[Empress Genmei] [Reiki] 1st year, 5th month, 25th day: An earthquake in Tōtōmi Province (modern western Shizuoka Prefecture) caused a landslide that blocked the Aratama River; after several tens of days the water burst out, submerging over 170 villages across three districts — Fuchi, Chōge, and Iwata — and damaging rice seedlings. The following day, the 26th, an earthquake in Mikawa Province (modern eastern Aichi Prefecture) caused 47 government storehouses and many private homes to collapse.
[Emperor Shōmu] [Tenpyō] 6th year, 4th month, 7th day: A great earthquake. Many private homes throughout the provinces collapsed, and numerous people were crushed to death; landslides, blocked rivers, and ground fissures were beyond counting.
