はるか昔、神代の時代に、速須佐之男命（はやすさのおのみこと）が根の国へ旅立たれようとして、天照大御神（あまてらすおおみかみ）のもとに暇乞いをするため高天原へ上られた際、山も川もことごとく動き、国土はすべて震えた。

【允恭天皇】五年七月十四日、地震あり。
【推古天皇】七年四月二十七日、大地が動き、建物はことごとく破壊された。すなわち四方に命令を下し、地震の神を祀らせなさった。
【皇極天皇】元年十月八日、地震があり雨が降る。翌日また地震し、この夜も地震して風が吹く。二十四日夜中に地震あり。
【天武天皇】四年十一月、大いに大地が動く。同六年六月十四日、大いに地震動く。同七年十二月、筑紫国（つくしのくに）で大きな地震があり、地面が割れた。その裂け目の幅は二丈、長さは三千余丈に及び、村々の民家が多く倒れ崩れた。このとき、百姓の家が一軒、丘の上にあったが、揺り出されて別の場所に移されてしまった。しかし家はまったく壊れず、

同十三年十月十四日、亥の刻（夜の十時頃）に大地震あり。山が崩れ、川の水が湧き出て、諸国の官舎・民家・寺社の破壊は数え切れないほどであった。人民や家畜の死傷者も多かった。伊予（いよ）の温泉が埋没し、土佐国（とさのくに）の田畑五十余万頃【百畝を一頃といい、すなわち五十余万町のことである】が海となった。

【文武天皇】【大宝】元年三月二十四日、丹波国（たんばのくに）で三日間地震が続く。
【元明天皇】【霊亀】元年五月二十五日、遠江国（とおとうみのくに）で地震があり、山が崩れ、麁玉川（あらたまがわ）がふさがり、数十日を経て水があふれ出し、敷智（ふち）・長下（ちょうげ）・石田（いわた）の三郡、百七十余村が水没し、苗が損なわれた。翌二十六日、三河国（みかわのくに）で地震があり、政府の倉庫四十七棟と民家が破れ崩れ落ちた。

In the ancient age of the gods, when Hayasusanoo no Mikoto was about to depart for the Land of Roots (Ne no Kuni), he ascended to Takamagahara to bid farewell to Amaterasu Ōmikami. At that time, every mountain and river stirred, and the entire land trembled.

**Reign of Emperor Ingyō:** 5th year, 7th month, 14th day — an earthquake occurred.
**Reign of Empress Suiko:** 7th year, 4th month, 27th day — the earth moved and all buildings were destroyed. Accordingly, orders were issued throughout the land to hold rites honoring the god of earthquakes.
**Reign of Empress Kōgyoku:** 1st year, 10th month, 8th day — an earthquake occurred and rain fell. The next day there was again an earthquake, and that night another earthquake struck, accompanied by wind. On the 24th day, in the middle of the night, there was an earthquake.
**Reign of Emperor Tenmu:** 4th year, 11th month — the earth shook greatly. 6th year, 6th month, 14th day — a great earthquake. 7th year, 12th month — a great earthquake struck Tsukushi Province (Kyushu), and the ground split open. The fissure was two jō wide and more than three thousand jō long. Many farmhouses in the villages collapsed and crumbled. 13th year, 10th month, 14th day, Hour of the Boar (approximately 10 p.m.) — a great earthquake. Mountains collapsed, river waters gushed forth, and the destruction of government offices, private homes, and temples and shrines across the provinces was beyond counting. Many people and livestock were killed or injured. The hot springs of Iyo Province were buried, and more than 500,000 *kyō* of farmland in Tosa Province [one *kyō* equals one hundred *se*, equivalent to over 500,000 *chō*] became ocean.
14th year, 12th month, 10th day — an earthquake originated from the west.

**Reign of Emperor Monmu:** **Taihō** era, 1st year, 3rd month, 24th day — earthquakes continued for three days in Tanba Province.
**Reign of Empress Genmei:** **Reiki** era, 1st year, 5th month, 25th day — an earthquake struck Tōtōmi Province; mountains collapsed, the Aratama River became blocked, and after several tens of days the waters overflowed, inundating more than 170 villages across the three districts of Fuchi, Chōge, and Iwata, damaging young rice seedlings. The following day, the 26th, an earthquake struck Mikawa Province, causing 47 government storehouses and many private homes to collapse and fall in.
**Reign of Emperor Shōmu:** **Tenpyō** era, 6th year, 4th month, 7th day — a great earthquake. Homes across the provinces collapsed; many were crushed to death; mountains crumbled, rivers were blocked, and the earth split open in ways too numerous to recount.
