の事まし〳〵けり。六十はかりの貴僧（きどう）そうもん申
給はく。われは紀州（きしう）高野山。金剛峯寺（こんかうふうし）の空海僧都
にておはします。わが御衣すてにやぶれくちたり

ねがはくは。御めぐみをかたじけなくせんと。みかど
すなはちおどろかせ給ひ。臣下に勅（ちよく）して。たれか
この御つかひにあたるべきと。御 尋（たづね）まし〳〵け
るに。醍醐寺（だいごじ）の。くわんげんあしやり。しかるべしとぞ
さためられける。かのくわんげんは。讃州（さんしう）の人なり。
俗姓（ぞくしやう）は秦氏（はたうぢ）これすなはち。聖宝（しやうぼう）上人の。上 足（そく）の御
弟子也。やまとの国 般若寺（はんにやじ）の開山（かいさん）なり。そのはじめ
延喜十九年に。だいごじの座主（ざす）に任（にん）ず。延喜三年に
僧正となる。此としの六月十一日に寂（じやく）せらる。然るに此
くわんげんをめして高野山への勅使（ちよくし）とし給ふ。みかど

ところは非常に多い。『秘府論』、『三教指帰』、『性霊集』等、その外『十住心論』など、すべてその教えがある。伝来の仏舎利八十粒、経論二百十六部、四百六十一巻、諸々の曼陀羅の宝器道具など、詳しく数えるには時間がないほどで、ことごとく山上に留め置かれた。

ここに空海僧都が入定して以後八十七年、人王六十代、醍醐天皇延喜二十一年の冬、十月に帝が御夢想されたことがあった。六十ばかりの貴い僧が奏上申し上げるには「私は紀州高野山金剛峯寺の空海僧都でございます。私の御衣はすでに破れ朽ちております。願わくは御恵みを賜りたく存じます」と。帝はすぐにお驚きになり、臣下に勅して「誰がこの御使いに当たるべきか」とお尋ねになったところ、醍醐寺の観賢阿闍梨が適任であろうと定められた。

その観賢は讃州の人である。俗姓は秦氏で、これはすなわち聖宝上人の上足の御弟子である。大和国般若寺の開山である。その始め延喜十九年に醍醐寺の座主に任じられ、延喜三年に僧正となった。この年の六月十一日に寂滅された。しかしこの観賢を召して高野山への勅使とされた。帝は

Initially appointed as head priest of Daigo Temple in the nineteenth year of Engi, he became a monk superintendent in the third year of Engi.
