空海すてに入定し給ひけれは。太上法皇をはしめ
奉り。今上 皇帝（くわうてい）。百 官（くはん）万乗（ばんせう）百姓（はくせい）にいたるまで
なげきかなしみ給ふこと。いふはかりなし。太上
法皇すなはち弔書（てうしよ）を給はりける。其文の中に。
真言（しんごん）の洪匠（こうしやう）密教（みつけう）の宗師（そうし）。邦家（ほうけ）その護持（ごぢ）により。
動植（とうしよく）その徳恵（とくけい）をになふ。豈（あに）はかりきや。淹滋（ゑんし）
いまだせまらざるに。無常（むじやう）にはかにをかさんとは。す
みやかに草書（さうしよ）をはせて。大 定（ぢやう）を弔慰（てうど）す
とぞあそばしける。まことに存世（ぞんせい）の眉目（びもく）滅後（めつご）の
嘉懐（かそい）なり。をよそ空海 平生（へいせい）つらねあつめ給ふ

空海が既に入定なさったので、太上法皇をはじめとして、今上皇帝、百官万民、一般民衆に至るまで嘆き悲しまれることは言葉では表現できないほどであった。太上法皇はすぐに弔書を下賜された。その文の中に「真言の大師、密教の宗師として、国家はその護持により守られ、動物も植物もその徳恵を受けている。どうして予想できたであろうか、まだ十分に教えが広まらないうちに、無常がにわかに襲うとは。急いで草書で書状を送り、大定（入定）を弔慰する」と記されていた。まことに生前の面目躍如、死後の嘉賞である。およそ空海が平生に集められた

Since Kūkai had already entered into samādhi, from the Retired Emperor on down to the reigning Emperor, all court officials, ten thousand subjects, and common people lamented and grieved beyond what words could express. The Retired Emperor immediately bestowed a letter of condolence. In that text was written: "As the great master of Shingon and patriarch of esoteric Buddhism, the nation is protected through his spiritual guardianship, and all sentient and plant life bear his virtuous beneficence. How could we have foreseen that impermanence would suddenly strike before his teachings had fully spread? We hastily send this letter in running script to offer condolences for his Great Samādhi." This was truly a testament to his distinguished reputation in life and worthy remembrance after death. Generally speaking, what Kūkai had collected throughout his lifetime
