の道鏡（だうきやう）禅師（ぜんじ）みかどにちかづき奉る。みかど御てう
あいなゝめならす。其 官位（くはんゐ）はいやしきものに
てありしかども。天 平（ひやう）宝字（ほうじ）八年に太政（だいじやう）大臣 迄（まで）
になされたり。神護（じんご）二年に法皇（ほうわう）のくらゐを
ゆるしゆげの道鏡（だうきやう）ほう皇と申ける。みかど余（あまり）
の御てうあひふかきによりて。いかにもして
道鏡（だうけう）を天 子（し）になし。みかどの御くらゐをゆずら
ばやと覚しめしけれども。公卿臣下さらにゆるし
給はず。しからば宇佐（うさ）八まんにつかひをたてゝ。神
のおほせをうけ給はり。ともかくもはからはん

弓削の道鏡禅師が帝に近づき奉った。帝の御寵愛は並々ならぬものであった。その官位は卑しい身分であったけれども、天平宝字八年には太政大臣にまでなされた。神護二年には法皇の位を許され、「弓削の道鏡法皇」と申した。帝があまりにも御寵愛が深いことにより、何としても道鏡を天子になし、帝の御位を譲りたいとお思いになったけれども、公卿臣下は全く許さなかった。それならばということで、宇佐八幡に使いを立てて、神の仰せを受け給わり、どうにかして計らおうとした。

The monk Dōkyō of Yuge approached and gained favor with the Empress. Her Imperial affection for him was extraordinary. Though his court rank had been of humble origin, by the eighth year of Tenpyō-hōji era he had risen to the position of Grand Minister of State (Daijō-daijin). In the second year of Jingo era, he was granted the rank of Retired Emperor (Hōō) and was called "Retired Emperor Dōkyō of Yuge." Because the Empress's favor toward him was so deep, she thought to somehow make Dōkyō the sovereign and abdicate her throne to him. However, the court nobles and ministers would absolutely not permit this. Therefore, she decided to send an envoy to Usa Hachiman shrine to receive an oracle from the deity and thereby find some way to accomplish her goal.
