さぬおこなひなり。にんみやう天わう承和（せうわ）二年
きのとの卯（う）三月廿一日。空海僧 都（づ）御としすでに
六十二才。高 野（や）山 金剛峯寺（こんかうぶうし）にまし〳〵て。結跏（けつか）趺（ふ）
座（ざ）し。大びるしやなの印をむすび。たちまちに
入定（にうぢやう）し給ふ。しかるに三月十五日より。しんが。実（じつ）
恵（ゑ）しんげう。真然（しんねん）等（とう）の御弟子をあつめて。一七日
のうち。みろくのみやうがうをとなへしめ。我 既（すでに）
入定（にうぢやう）して。今より五十六億七千万さいのあかつき
みろくぼさつこの世かいに出給ひ竜華樹（りうげじゆ）のもと
にして。正がくとり給ひ。梅怛哩耶（はいたりや）仏と名づけ。奉

らん其時かならず我もあらはれて。御 説法（せつほう）を
聴聞（ちやうもん）すへしとおほせ有けり。かくて二十一日
寅（とら）の一点（てん）に。たちまちに入定し給ひにけり。御
弟子たちは則七日〳〵の中陰（ちうゐん）ねんころにつとめ
給ふに。御かみ御ひげのくろ〴〵とおひのびさせ
給ひて。御身はひたすらあたゝかにして。御 存生（ぞんしやう）
のときのことし。すでに五十日にあたる日。御かみを
そり。御衣をきせかへ奉り。則 御体（ごたい）をおさめ衣を
たゝみて壇（だん）をつくり。其上にそとばたてられたり

現代語訳

絶えることなく行われている修行である。仁明天皇承和二年、乙卯の年三月二十一日、空海僧都は御年既に六十二歳で、高野山金剛峯寺におられて、結跏趺坐し、大毘盧遮那の印を結び、たちまちに入定なさった。しかし三月十五日より、真雅、実恵、真教、真然等の御弟子を集めて、一週間の間、弥勒の名号を唱えさせ、「我は既に入定して、今より五十六億七千万歳の暁に弥勒菩薩がこの世界に出現なさり、龍華樹の下で正覚をお取りになり、梅怛哩耶仏と名乗られる。

その時には必ず我も現れて、御説法を聴聞するであろう」とおっしゃった。こうして二十一日寅の一刻に、たちまちに入定なさった。御弟子たちは七日ずつの中陰を丁寧に勤めたところ、御髪も御髭も黒々と伸び続け、御身体はひたすら温かで、御存命の時と同じであった。既に五十日に当たる日、御髪を剃り、御衣を着せ替え申し上げ、そのまま御遺体を納め、衣を畳んで壇を作り、その上に卒塔婆を立てられた。

This is a practice that continues without interruption. On the twenty-first day of the third month in the second year of Jōwa under Emperor Ninmyō, the year of the Wood Rabbit, Kūkai the priest-superintendent, already sixty-two years of age, was at Kongōbu-ji temple on Mount Kōya where he sat in the lotus position, formed the mudra of the Great Vairocana, and suddenly entered into meditation samādhi. However, from the fifteenth day of the third month, he gathered his disciples Shinga, Jitsue, Shingyō, Shinnen and others, and for seven days had them chant the sacred name of Maitreya, saying: "I have already entered into samādhi, and after 5,670,000,000 years from now, when Maitreya Bodhisattva appears in this world and attains perfect enlightenment under the Dragon Flower Tree, taking the name Buddha Maitreya,

at that time I will certainly appear and listen to his dharma teaching." Thus, at the first hour of the Tiger on the twenty-first day, he suddenly entered into samādhi. When his disciples diligently performed the intermediate period observances of seven-day periods, his hair and beard continued to grow black and luxuriant, his body remained thoroughly warm, just as when he was alive. On the day marking the fiftieth day, they shaved his hair, changed his robes, then enshrined his body as it was, folded the robes to make an altar platform, and erected a stupa on top of it.
