莱菔（らいふく・だいこん）『本草綱目』
八月に種を蒔き、二十四時間を経てすぐに発芽する。その根には鬚根があり、その鬚根の十分の八、九は南北を指す。これがその性質である。翌年の晩春に至り、花茎を抽出して四弁の白紫色の花を開き、莢を結んで中に数個の種子がある。夏蘿蔔（からふく・夏大根）『莢菔集解』、楊花蘿菔（ようからふく・三月大根）『江陰県志』、水蘿菔（すいらふく・森口大根）『群芳譜』などは皆その一種であって、その鬚根が南北を指さないものが多い。

本草綱目集解に云う。時珍が曰く、圃人が莱菔を種える。六月に種を蒔き、秋に苗を採り、冬に根を掘り、春末に高い花茎を抽出して小花を開く。紫碧色で、夏初に角（莢）を結ぶ。その種子は大麻子のように大きく、円長は不等で、黄赤色である。

広群芳譜註に云う。菘は菜の名、莱菔は根の名である。或いは云う、性能く麦毒を制するが故に来服と名づく。来麦の服する所を言うなり。

Laifu (Radish) from "Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica)"
Seeds are sown in the eighth month, and germination occurs within twenty-four hours. The roots have fibrous roots, and eight or nine-tenths of these fibrous roots point north and south. This is its natural characteristic. By late spring of the following year, it extends flower stalks, opens four-petaled white-purple flowers, forms pods, and contains several seeds inside. Summer radish (kara-daikon) from "Jiajie Collection," Yang-flower radish (sangatsu-daikon) from "Jiangyin County Records," Water radish (moriguchi-daikon) from "Qunfang Pu," and others are all varieties of the same species, though many of their fibrous roots do not point north-south.

The Bencao Gangmu collection states: Shizhen said that gardeners cultivate radishes. They sow seeds in the sixth month, harvest seedlings in autumn, dig roots in winter, and by late spring extend tall stalks to open small flowers. The flowers are purple-blue in color, and pods form in early summer. The seeds are as large as hemp seeds, varied in their round-elongated shape, and yellow-red in color.

The Guang Qunfang Pu annotation states: Song is the name for the vegetable, while laifu is the name for the root. Some say it is named "laifu" (literally "coming to take") because its nature can counteract wheat toxicity, meaning it serves what wheat brings.
