本草綱目集解に云う。時珍が言うには、三月に蔓を生じて延び引き、葉は水上に浮かび、扁平で先端があり、光る面は鏡のようである。葉の下の茎には股があり、蝦の股のようである。一茎一葉が両々相い違って蝶の翅の状のようである。五六月に小白花を開き、日に背いて生じ、昼は合わさり宵は開いて月に随って転移する。その実には数種があり、あるものは三角四角、あるものは両角、無角のものもある。野菱は湖中に自生し、葉実ともに小さく、その角は硬く直立して人を刺す。その色は嫩（若い）時は青く、老いると黒い。嫩時には剥いて食べると甘美で、老いると蒸し煮して食べる。家菱は陂塘（ため池）に種を蒔き、葉実ともに大きく、角は軟らかくて脆い。また両角が弯曲して弓の形のようなものもある。その色には青、紅、紫がある。

The Bencao Gangmu Collection and Explanation states: Shizhen said that in the third month, it produces vines that extend and spread, with leaves floating on the water surface that are flat with pointed tips, and the shiny surface is like a mirror. The stem below the leaves has joints like shrimp legs. One stem and one leaf are arranged in pairs, alternating like butterfly wings. In the fifth and sixth months, it opens small white flowers that turn away from the sun, closing during the day and opening at night, moving with the moon. Its fruits come in several varieties: some are triangular or quadrangular, others have two angles, and some have no angles. Wild water caltrops grow naturally in lakes, with both leaves and fruits being small, and their angles are hard and upright, pricking people. Their color is green when tender and black when old. When tender, they are peeled and eaten for their sweet taste; when old, they are steamed and boiled before eating. Cultivated water caltrops are planted in ponds and reservoirs, with both leaves and fruits being large, and their angles are soft and brittle. There are also those with two angles curved like a bow shape. Their colors include green, red, and purple.
