弘化四年丁未（ひのとひつじ）三月二十四日、当山（善光寺）の如来開帳の最中であったことから、山門および市中はひとしく賑わい、夜は万灯が灯されて白昼のように明るく、たいへん繁盛していた。ところがその夜、亥の刻（午後十時頃）に突然大地震が起こり、大雷のような轟音とともに、寺院および市中が一度に揺れ崩れ、あたりは暗闇となった。まもなく数か所から火の手が上がり、大火となった。家々からは泣き叫ぶ声が天地に響き渡り、無事に逃げ出せた者も、父母・妻子・兄弟を助けようと苦難を尽くしたが、火を消そうとする者もなく（それどころではない有様であった）。

An Account of the Great Earthquake, Fires, and Flood at Zenkoji Temple in Shinano Province
On the twenty-fourth day of the third month of the year Koka 4 (1847), the cyclical year of Hinoto-Hitsuji (Yin Fire-Sheep), the Gokaicho — the special public display of the sacred image at Zenkoji Temple — was in full progress. As a result, the temple precincts and the surrounding town were bustling with visitors, and at night countless lanterns lit up the area as brightly as midday, making it a scene of great festivity and prosperity.
However, on that very night, at the Hour of the Boar (around 10 o'clock in the evening), a sudden great earthquake struck with a roar like mighty thunder. The temples and the town were simultaneously shaken to pieces, and everything was plunged into darkness. Before long, fires broke out at several locations and spread into a great conflagration.
